I don't know about the numbers, but I have a feeling that Zetman was one of those that did better in the West than Japan.

Deadman Wonderland was a big hit in America but in Japan it was a huge flop

Voltron (Go-Lion) They actually produced new episodes for the show after it stopped airing in Japan, because it was so popular in the U.S.

Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World) sold something like 300 units per volume in Japan yet I've seen a lot of western viewers call it a masterpiece.

Frequently some of the best animes ive ever seen are not very popular. Just as frequently anime that is sold to the lowest denominator is very popular. An example is the the really bad sailor moon dubs.

Shin Sekai Yori I would say the anime is better than the manga. The anime is based on the novel not the manga.

I would say Space Dandy, Bleach, and Samurai Champloo. I also think Naruto was once very popular in the west when it was on the Disney channel (or was it Cartoon Network?) I guess Dragonball Z might be one but I think that was just hugely popular in both markets.

Dragon Ball Z had a huge cultural impact on the Japanese

I read on one of the forums on CR that Btooom! was much more popular abroad than in Japan. I think it tanked in Japan. Which is a bummer since I thought it was great

I've always heard Trigun didn't fare as well in Japan as it did in the U.S. Mostly due to the Wild West aspect.

As mentioned before, Trigun, Baccano, Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Which none of those surprise me at all.

Even though Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were popular in the West and Japan, I really do feel like the popularity balance tipped towards the West's side.

Any thoughts? I'm really curious about how the shows have fared in Japan.
