Purely my opinion but....

If you want to start with Universal Century (original Gundam) then watch the 0079 movie trilogy first. This is always a good place to start.

If you want to start with an alternate universe series then pick up Gundam 00. It combines many of the best aspects of previous AU series (especially Gundam Wing) and adds its own twists too. The animation and music are both superb as well (topped only by the currently finishing Gundam Unicorn OVA).

I would like to suggest the original show, but most people don't have a a taste nowadays for anything from the pre-digital era. Though something from the UC timeline is likely a strong way to go. The current Gundam Unicorn kinda sits towards the middle-end of the UC timeline (also abbreviated as Gundam UC) and has been a wonderful time, visually and all else attached.

Watching that and discussing it with other Gundam-y folks while it is fresh and relevant will forge friendships to explore the franchise with.

Secondly, there are ~three~ Gundam shows in the pipe. G no Reconquista, with the Eureka 7 character designer. Another is Gundam: The Origin, which is based off a manga that modernizes the entire original Gundam. So if the original Gundam is too old, they're updating it. From the manga I hear its been great. Thridly, Gundam Build Fighters may or may not work, as it is a show where people profess their love for all things Gundam and fight around with plastic Gundam models. It sounded silly and I kinda looked at the Sunrise guy at Otakon like he was mad for the duration of the announcement panel. But hey, it was really really fun! Now they hinted a new season is around the corner.

There's so many types and flavors of Gundam though, it is really hard to suggest one.
If one Gundam doesn't work, others might. I met someone who thought After War Gundam X was the best. First and only time I ever heard that kind of support for that one!

My Personal BEST suggestion?
Gundam 0800: War in the Pocket

It is only a few episodes and really high quality for the 80s. Not many robots in it at all, mostly about the people. Should be en ecellent starting place.

Double Zeta (weakest of the UC series but not as bad as most seem to think imo)

I'm 13 episodes into it, and much of it thus far seems like they were trying to turn Gundam into a comedy, but failed.

This is more or less what happened, far as I can tell. It starts to feel more like a normal Gundam series about half way through. It almost feels like there's specifically a cutoff between about episodes 25-30 or so where the writers went "okay, we had our fun, time to make a Gundam series." It never reaches the same heights as the previous ones, but it does get better. In my case I wasn't as put off by the comedy as a lot of people were I think, but it does jump the shark a little too much to be sure. Mashymyre in particular gets so over the top and silly that it's impossible to take him seriously as a villain or just a character in general. Fortunately he goes almost entirely absent early on and doesn't return until much later at which point he's a bit more competent and much more devious.

It's definitely disappointing as a sequel to Zeta which, in my opinion, may very well be the best series in the franchise. I just went in with fairly low expectations because of what I had read about it beforehand so I guess I wasn't surprised, and that probably made it easier to stomach.

Considering that Bandai Entertainment closed its doors in the U.S. in 2012, unless Crunchyroll gets hold of old Gundam DVDs in one of its Deals of the Day, you are going to have a difficult time watching this series (legally). My recommendation: Go to Daisuki and look at their streaming offerings, which include several Gundam series, including Unicorn. (There is also the Gundam Official You Tube channel.)

But do be aware of one thing: Traditionally, death and loss are to Gundam what love triangles and singing are to Macross.

WHAT THE HECK?! WHEN DID THIS DAISUKI WEBSITE COME ALIVE??? ALL OF THAT ANIME FOR FREE!!! AND LEGAL?! WHY AM I PAYING FOR CRUNCY?! WHAT THE HECKKKK THEY EVEN HAVE NISEKOI THERE - FREE!

As per most posts, this is my personal opinion. Gundam SEED/SEED Destiny is the best ( good nostalgia to the original 1979 Gundam, but had its originality as well, thoug I agree in SEED some animation was off a bit, Destiny fixed alot of those animation issues though), followed by the 08th MS Team (truly only favorite from the UC timeline), and Wing (classic 90s anime). I didn't like Gundam 00 (it felt like the series was trying to hard to be Wing) and I felt the movie ruined everything. I have overlooked AGE, and Turn A Gundam was okay. G Gundam was.... different and silly, in a kinda good way. Then I appreciate the UC timeline spinoffs of the original, but I think that they are unnecessary (Zeta/ZZ, etc), with exception to the movies.

My favourite, and the one I'd suggest, is Gundam Wing. I think that one portrayed Gundams as super weapons the best. 00 also did this as well, you couldn't go wrong with either one, although if you want something more modern, 00 is the way to go. I choose these for the sake of brevity and just being able to watch them without having to think of any of the other lore. 0079, original one, is also great, but as you've heard, it's a very old series and I'm not sure how into it you'd get.

I didn't like G gundam at all, I just found it dumb. It made me cringe so much. I also disliked Seed, so freaking emo. Never finished the first season and never plan on going back to it.

Yeah but in comparison their video player suuuucks. Plus, Crunchyroll has more shows. Daisuki only has Aniplex shows and Gundam, plus a few extras.

Legend has it – and you can tell that I have been a Gundam fan for way too long – that Tomino was so sick of doing Gundam at that point in time that he purposely threw ZZ under the bus and did the first half that way so that people would stop watching. ... It had the opposite effect. ZZ was still pretty popular, just with a different crowd (e.g. younger kids). The second half is still pretty good, though, especially for us Haman(-sama) fans.

To be fair, if you look at Tomino's other works from the mid-'80s (e.g. Ideon, Dunbine, and L-Gaim, possibly Xabungle), you can see why he might have wanted to get away from Gundam, as those are some of his best efforts (IMO).

Also: This topic needs more love for Gundam X. Alas, it has never been legitimately available outside Japan.

Honestly? I watched unicorn without watching the originals and loved it (or rather love it), gundam-00 has an enjoyable if trashy S1, poor S2 and awful movie. Wing is good, seed and seed destiny are very good.

Start with the original MSG then watch Zeta ZZ and Char's Counter Attack. This is the core of the main UC story line. After that watch 08th MS Team, 0080, and 0083 which are more like side stories, but are still rather good on their own. Particularly 08th MS team, Earth based mobile suit platoon combat with no UBER Gundams or Newtypes, the story is good and the mecha combat may very well be the best out of all the Gundam series.

If you were not a premium user at CR, however, which site would you rather view the same series at: CR, with only 360p resolution and multiple ads, or Daisuki, with higher resolution and only one pre-roll?

I assume when you say their video player sucks, you are talking about presentation or lack of features, as I've never had a problem with their video streams.

You also missed that they have one exclusive simulcast this season (M3 ~Sono Kuroki Hagane~), and they have Nekomonogatari Black, which you will not find neither here at CR or at Hulu, despite being from Aniplex.

You find Seed more emo than Neon Genesis Evangelion? Or rather what worked for you on NGE that didn't on seed?
