For a while now, I've noticed when discussing some of my favorite anime that somehow the "fact" that these shows are anti-female always seems to come up.

How could it be? I don't hate the ladies, so how could I like to be entertained by media if it had such a hateful attitude towards women?

Did that make me a horrible person?

It wasn't until I was watching some sweet, sweet yuri that I realized, that much as the forbidden love between the leads could not be contained, that the love anime has for women, both the female form and the ways women motivate men, could no longer be ignored.

No, anime isn't misogynistic: but there is a large part of the fanbase that has disturbing attitudes towards women and sexuality.

I think that is worth discussing.

So, here it is:

Haters, why you gotta hate her?

What is it about attractive, ambitious women which seems to be such a problem for so many anime viewers?

Why is it that instead of celebrating a female who is comfortable with her body and her sexuality and has no problem trying to start a relationship with a member of the opposite sex as a good thing, there are those who have to shame such characters?

Is it the fact that there are anime where the male lead might have multiple women seeking to enter into a monogamous, mutually interested relationship (so terrible!)? What is wrong with that? How is that any different than the social dynamic of trying to pick someone up at a party, a club, etc, where multiple people will try to pick up someone? Or how is that any different than any group of friends where someone is single and there are romantic feelings shared by several members in the group?

Is it that sometimes males or females in anime must prove they care about the person they desire by getting involved in sometimes awkward situations? That, fellow anime viewers, is just called being a teenager or 20-something. (Insert your own embarrassing moments here.)

"But women are objectified in anime! Treated as sex objects! MALE GAZE!----"

Well.......so?

What is wrong with just celebrating sexiness? Are we in 1600s New England?

What is also wrong, once more, of somewhat realistically depicting how people behave at the age they are portrayed in anime, anyways?

What I want to know, are what are the alternatives these viewers want. Should the characters take responsibility for holding hands or falling down and accidentally groping each other and get married?

Some anime viewers have problems with the characters found in many shows.

I just have a problem with all the straw men found in their arguments.

So that's why I made this thread. I am curious if an argument can be made about anime being hostile to women without resorting to claiming:

1. There is something wrong with displays of sexuality.

2. There is something wrong with portraying teenagers as teenagers or 20somethings as 20somethings.

3. There is something wrong with portraying social dynamics amongst peer groups as how they can be be viewed amongst real-world peer groups.

4. Stories revolving around certain narrative elements, tropes, or archetypes are somehow lesser stories or objectively less entertaining than other stories.

Burn the straw men, and let them light stage. Let the best argument win!

I will not be participating in this thread.

But I very much look forward to seeing the fireworks that I assume will ensue. Don't disappoint me, thread.

The issue I have is the ease with which some people in anime fandom sling around the word "misogynistic" in situations where "sexist" would be the correct term. It cheapens the impact of the correct usage, much as constantly calling anyone that gropes a women a rapist would dilute the impact of that word.

Anime is not misogynistic. It does objectify women quite a lot though. It's not about the women being sex objects either. It is that there are a lot of animes where the female character is objectified as an accessory to the main character.

The worst of these animes is SAO. Every girl's life revolves around the main character. Literally, we only know of them in relation to the main character, nothing else matters other than why they like the main character.

The majority of animes don't do that though. Only the ones that pander to the Japanese equivalent of self-conscious basement dwellers.

I think that anime is just as misogynistic as it is misandric.

"What is also wrong, once more, of somewhat realistically depicting how people behave at the age they are portrayed in anime, anyways?"

Because most the time they are no where near being realistic.
