Times change.

There was one person over in the ANN forums that disbelieved that Stars would be included (despite claiming he had read the article that made it quite clear it was). His basis was something along the lines of 'Toei being hell bent on not releasing it to the west'.

We've moved on from when the main distribution channels for anime were a broadcast deal and VHS or DVDs sold in retail stores to streaming and DVDs or Blu-rays primarily sold online. Not to mention that some things that might have been controversial almost 20 years ago aren't today.

They should acquire the rights to this and dub it like the old Godzilla movies. That would be hilarious.

DVD/Bluray releases for ALL 6 series (This includes Stars and the upcoming Crystal) and all 3 movies
NEW English dubs with original Japanese names (and lesbians and hopefully no donuts)

Viz has been lighting up tweeter with the news, first DVDs should be out this fall.

Stars...keeping the appropriate names...no more moral guardians meddling with Haruka and Michiru's relationship...and all of Crystal?

I...am I dead? Is this Heaven?

The availability of the series even merited a mention on the tech blog Engadget:

Of course, not being an anime-related site, you can expect a few comments like this gem:

I don't get it either, but I know better than to get between an fan and their soft-core unrealistic cartoon porn.

It also bears mentioned that the uncut subtitled version of the series will start on Hulu this Monday (May 19), with the first 4 episodes, with 2 additional episodes following each Monday.

So what's stopping Crunchyroll from picking up the 90's anime?

Given the probable scale of Viz's investment, I would expect the their contract for the series is exclusive within the US and Canada.

Unfortunately that's only half right. My fear is that because of Hulu, their contract has been restricted to the US only. And as I live on the other side of the Canada-U.S. border, that would mean I and all of my countrymen moonies will end up losing out. Also remember that Viz has picked up the "North American" rights to SMX as well, and my further fear is that consequently SMX will end up only available on Crunchyroll outside of Japan, the US and Canada, meaning I would have to turn to NicoNico to watch SMX. Know that I have never known Viz to do any business in Canada.

Viz's license covers both the US and Canada, however, and always has.

They've promised a Neon Alley solution for Canadians, but even if they never followed through, the two countries are always tied together at the hip for anime licensing. In other words, Viz has the streaming rights for Canada, regardless if they ever utilize those rights. That is what allowed them to make their original Neon Alley programming available in Canada without having to re-negotiate any existing licenses.

There is an old tenet at play here that says "use it or lose it". Viz needs to start exercising its right of distribution in Canada or Toei and PNP will simply claw it back and give it out to a different company. Viz's window of opportunity may only be open for a short time.

Again, had Viz not acquired the rights to Sailor Moon, I would not have cared, as that is my one and only favourite anime. But they did, so now Viz has squarely attracted my attention. With the framework in place right now, my one and only favourite anime is being denied to me. I don't want to see this status quo last one more day.

Rant mode off.
