I had no idea that 1999-2006 was old school. Wow. I must be from the "Ancient Immortal School" cause I started watching all the way back in the early 80's.

This is a weak post, man. Because not only is there non-harem/ecchi/moe anime coming out today, but there was harem/ecchi anime coming out at the same time as Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon during the "old school".

Instead of trying to start an argument, why not go watch some anime? There's Knights of Sidonia, Black Bullet, Chaika: The Coffin Princess, Blade & Soul, Riddle Story of Devil, and a bunch of others that aren't like the animes you're railing against.

I like the old school anime, but I do think that there are anime out there that are still coming up with good characters, setting, and plot.

I'm 25. When I am implying old school. I am talking about the general quality of the anime. The fact that the ones that I listed actually had quite unique plots to be told, Unique characters with personalities, settings that were creatively made instead of the 325 school anime. I can list animes further back, I used to watch Tenchi muyo, dragonball Z, Lupin the 3rd, exc exc. I'm using these as prime examples of what was unique creative anime. Full metal panic, Outlaw star, two other great ones.

Today's anime's are almost copy pastes every season. same school setting, same main hero having like 6 to 7 girls throwing themselves over him; accidentally showing him every part of his body. It almost never changes. I miss the creative side to anime.

Not to say there are still good ones that come out, but they are rare golden eggs that dont come as often as they need too.
I personally like to remember an anime for it's unique coolness. I can actually remember claymore, trigun, full metal panic, cowboybeebop.
I however cant remember the 100+ school animes i've watched over the years.

The reason: they are all the same booby panty flashing shit. So take this as a troll if you want, but it is not.

I agree that there are too many "school" anime/manga out there and I dislike many of the wafer thin plots, cookie cutter character designs, and contrite generalization, but anime is a product and that's what sells at the moment. Most of the people buying anime/manga are.... school age kids I would assume so much of this resonates with their daily lives.. Even many of the shows that aren't set in school are "kids doing amazing things surrounded by idiotic adults".

Anime/Manga factories have found their cash cow... their "niche" if you will. The "Japanese school girl" has pretty much become a cultural icon that is recognizable around the world.

You'll just have to be more selective in your viewing & reading. Look for the pearls among the swine. Anime factories will stop churning out school based anime when it stops selling and not any sooner, but there will always be a few awesome non-school, non-panty flashing shows to watch.

But every season you can bet on at least a handful of mindless school based shows or sexualized 10-year old's trying to kill each other. Pass them by if they don't interest you. There is still a ton of great stuff to watch/read.

The key to longevity in this hobby is to not become jaded or burnt out. Focus on the 2 or 3 good shows each season and ignore the crap. Fill in the gaps by going through archives and watching old shows that you didn't get around to watching the first time they aired.

Experiment: try chatty shows like Spice & Wolf (http://www.hulu.com/spice-and-wolf) or brilliant shows like Steins;Gate (http://www.hulu.com/steinsgate) or buy an excellent show like Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.

Don't stop. Movement is life.

"Does anybody miss old school anime?"

Well, if I do, all I have to do is look at my DVD / VHS shelf, and there it is for me to watch again.

Not the question the topic seems to be asking, but it is the question I feel like answering.

I feel people give in to nostalgia too easily. If you were to watch every single show this season, then I would believe you OP. Making generalities without any proof is just lame. Give shows a chance.

"Oh look fanservice. Must mean a show is bad. O.o" K, have fun with your life, I'll keep watching the ridiculousness unfold.

1 out of 100(ish) was unique then.
1 out of 100(ish) is unique now.

The only difference is we've forgotten the other 99 from the first sample.

A change of pace might be good if you're feeling that burnt out over the current selection, though; I'm only keeping up with a few shows right now, otherwise lately I've just been watching old movies and OVAs from the 80s. They've all just been 3-6/10s except for one so far, but it's still an enjoyable scenery change. And I like the old art, when it's good.

Come to think of it I don't think I have seen an anime recently with an old school in it. They always used to have those highschool drama / mystery animes where the kids would go and explore the old school buildings, but haven't seen those recently... I can't remember, was there an old school in that Maiden x Amnesia anime? Not the otome game one but the one with that guy who falls for the ghost chick.

I think that was just an abandoned part of the school grounds, but I could be wrong.

But checking out an abandoned school would require trespassing on said abandoned school grounds, and that's not really the sort of activity you see in anime much right now. It's not like Angel Densetsu or Tenjou Tenge anymore.

The image of the Japanese high school student doesn't include motorcycles and gang brawls anymore apparently.

So I suppose you could say that animes with old schools in them are old school animes

I'm talking about black lagoon, Claymore, Trigun, Cowboy beebop. The good ol' days. What has this generation come too...

It's time to let go of the past my friend.

Hataraku Maou-Sama had one in it.

I actually find this kinda hilarious, after thinking about Monogatari. it's got deep, interesting characters along with a multi-layered story steeped in culture and mythology.

guess what else it has? high school students, panty shots, nudity, yuri-esque shower scenes, sexualized lolis...

yea, it's an amazing anime.
