Today's anime's are almost copy pastes every season. same school setting, same main hero having like 6 to 7 girls throwing themselves over him; accidentally showing him every part of his body. It almost never changes. I miss the creative side to anime.

I agree that there are too many "school" anime/manga out there and I dislike many of the wafer thin plots, cookie cutter character designs, and contrite generalization, but anime is a product and that's what sells at the moment. Most of the people buying anime/manga are.... school age kids I would assume so much of this resonates with their daily lives.. Even many of the shows that aren't set in school are "kids doing amazing things surrounded by idiotic adults".

Anime/Manga factories have found their cash cow... their "niche" if you will. The "Japanese school girl" has pretty much become a cultural icon that is recognizable around the world.

You'll just have to be more selective in your viewing & reading. Look for the pearls among the swine. Anime factories will stop churning out school based anime when it stops selling and not any sooner, but there will always be a few awesome non-school, non-panty flashing shows to watch.

But every season you can bet on at least a handful of mindless school based shows or sexualized 10-year old's trying to kill each other. Pass them by if they don't interest you. There is still a ton of great stuff to watch/read.

The key to longevity in this hobby is to not become jaded or burnt out. Focus on the 2 or 3 good shows each season and ignore the crap. Fill in the gaps by going through archives and watching old shows that you didn't get around to watching the first time they aired.

Experiment: try chatty shows like Spice & Wolf (http://www.hulu.com/spice-and-wolf) or brilliant shows like Steins;Gate (http://www.hulu.com/steinsgate) or buy an excellent show like Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.

Don't stop. Movement is life.

I appreciate this post. Yeah... they are becoming more rare these days. Any recommendations for any manga's that fit the style of anime's that i listed?

PS: I like spice and wolf a lot

Personally I love old school anime more. People who complain about the drawings are probably mainstream kids who don't appreciate the roots of something. As for story depth, thats not limited to old school or new generation animes as I've seen great storys from both eras. Personally the drawing style from the 90s period is my favorite as it was between a more realistic and grown up characters with a little bit of moe, as opposed to 16 year old moe blobs.

One of my all time favorite characters is Tear Grants. Even though she is 16, she was drawn and animated as around 23 and very mature for her age. I dislike the reverse age gap a lot.

Define "old school", to you or someone in their 40s? Just noticed the thread is a bit old so yeah...

I do miss world exploration shows in general I guess.

All of these are at least good manga (in most cases, significantly better than their anime counterparts), none of them take place in high school, and none of them are particularly moe:

Attack on Titan
Arpeggio of Blue Steel (okay, there is a little moe interspersed between the fighting)
Full Metal Alchemist
Monster
Aiki (very ecchi, especially towards beginning; first couple volumes do involve a high school)
Sekerie (very ecchi; one of the characters is a bit moe)
Full Metal Panic / FMP: Sigma (based on Light Novel series)
Mouyu Yuusha Yusha: Be Mine Hero (based on Light Novel series; this is the better of the manga adaptations)
Ah My Goddess (been around forever, but just finished recently; romance)
Btooom!

I'm ok with both old school anime and newer anime. The quality of old school anime is about the only thing that bothers me, but I have nothing against either of them.

There are so many damn anime every season, if you can't find something to enjoy you are putting way too much effort into being disappointed. I am currently watching 8 simulcasts each week; and while they may not be breaking new ground, I am enjoying them.

I especially love the self deprecating humor in a lot of the newer shows. The creators that know their shows are cliche and tropey; and just go ahead and make that part of the humor.

I think my favorite thing about this post is this: You literally just took the stereotype for Harem/Ecchi shows and tried to group all current anime into it.

Having watched a good amount of Harem/Ecchi, I will tell you this, It is not all the same, and not all about panty shots/boobs .

I mean, that's like me saying all the current super popular anime is all about fighting, the main character starting out weak then getting stronger, some sort of martial arts, and some love romance that takes side stage.

You see what I did there: I just stereotyped a genre.

If you would like to be more open-minded and try to understand the Harem/Ecchi scene here are some good suggestions:

1. Nisekoi
2. Trinity Seven
3. High School DxD
4. Demon King Daimo
5. Campione!

Now what defined the stereotype are shows that were actually released during the time period of the anime you stated: around 2008. These include:

1. To Love-Ru
2. Rosario + Vampire
3. Sekirei

Now these shows are some of my favorites, but are what defined the Harem/Ecchi Genre. In all honesty Rosario + Vampire's manga was some kick ass reading, that focused on story and action a lot more than the anime did. Plus To Love-Ru has one of the longest runs for an anime outside the standard action/martial arts anime. It has actually gone through several adaptations ranging from the Original To Love Ru, Motto To Love Ru, To Love Ru Darkness, and the OVA's respectively for each.

Ohh and btw, if you really want to say that old anime didn't have this category either,

1.Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki has been around since 1992.
2. Love Hina has been around since 2000.

All I'm saying is this. Don't Stereotype . It's bad mkay?

Hey OP, though those aren't exactly what i'd call old school (Wings of Hanneamise anyone? Grave of the Fireflies?)

I do like your taste, so why not try on Samurai Champloo? That's a sure fire hit if you liked Beebop, as for Trigun oh man, at least tell me you watched the movie?

@dracphelan i'll have to look into some of those 1970s ones, I'm kinda new on here but if you read this and can send me a list of your top rated (seriously) old school animes I would be in your debt! Thanks everyone! And common now, no hate, we're all just trying to enjoy some good anime! =D
