My dad doesn't say much about it.
My brother thinks animes are kinda cool, prolly cuz he used to watch Naruto.
My mom talks the most shit about it

I used to hide it from my family. If you read my other thread about scenes in different countries, you'll see why.

I had 3 figures when they found out. They were those game prize figures which are actually pretty cheap (like $20~30). My sister, who is 14 years younger than me was playing in my room. Later that day, she was going around saying, "There's cute toys in brother's room!" So my mom came to check it out -_-.

She asks me how much I spent on them and I lie to her. She even thinks game prize figures are expensive. Idk wtf she will say if she finds out how much my scaled figures were.

The worst part, she doesn't know the difference between my figures and barbie dolls. She comes into my room and say stuff like "Is this a little girl's room? Why do you have so many dolls?" And she also says shit about my posters on the wall. She misinterprets my hobbies. She thinks my problem is that I watch animes with whole bunch of girls in it. And she thinks those animes are targeted for little girls. My only abnormality is that I'm in love with 2D girls. (Plus lolita complex & masochism) This is VERY offensive to me. How dare compare factory mass produced barbie dolls to stuff I collect?

She keeps saying I have to grow out of it. Like what is there to grow out of? The stuff I watch are what adult guys would enjoy. (Not necessarily as in like 'rated H' adult but as in story and stuff) She needs to check out some of the stuff I watch and read. Also, she keeps telling me: "Japan has bad cultures. You should watch Korean Dramas instead." I'm Korean and I'm not even interested in the whole k-pop thing.

I have H doujinshis and eroges well hidden. Which is typical for guys. She'll probably freak out.

What does your family say?

My mom caught me watching Waraneko and Nyaruko-san a couple times. She thought I was being childish and a 15 year old wife would be perfect for me, nevermind that I only date women who are older lol. Oh and Japanese people are perverted.

I feel for your growing pains though. If I was in my teens, my parents would probably react the same. They'd freak out if they saw me watching a toon flashing boobs. My brother and I used to watch Ranma 1/2 in secret back in the 90s because of that.

My immediately family is either dead or not in my life so the only person similar would be my gf. She isn't interested in it but she doesn't care either. If you have to hide what you enjoy than there's probably an issue in the relationship whether family or other.

Though I don't consider myself an otaku. Not even close really.

My mum said the anime girls have "pretty eyes". That's the only comment I've ever heard.

I often leave my Yaoi manga lying around the house... so i'm pretty sure she saw some of the graphic scenes in those books... (some are on the cover itself)... I think she just laughed it off...

I'm glad I was raised in a pretty non-strict household; I can't imagine my personality being compatible with a strict household. I'm not good at following rules and other people's rules, especially since I'm very good at forming my own values and rules.

My parents are the type to hide things and pretend they don't know certain things. That being said, i barely even speak to my relatives so whatever they think i could care less.

My parents have known since I was in middle school that I was addicted to anime and video games, and they may not fully understand it but they try to. They sometimes even watch a new anime that's dubbed with me. Though they arent into it theirselves. They understand how important it is for me and helped me buy dvds and games when I was younger.

I'm probably lucky in that sense.

Luckily for me they don't care. I still pause videos and switch to another tab when they come in as a reflex because you never know what could happen next with some shows, but other than that they're not against me watching it. I don't know how they'd react if I had any figures or posters because I don't own any, but as far as watching goes they don't mind.

They've grown to accept it and have been pretty good about listening to me talk about the artistic merits of the medium.

None of them really are interested in it themselves, but they are pretty good about just letting me do my thing.

I don't think my mom, don't have a dad in my life, even knows what anime is other than Pokemon, lol. I don't buy eroge, posters, H-doujin, figures, or other merch. I did win a dakimakura as part of a giveaway that is ecchi, though, I don't use it, lmao. I do collect the anime I enjoy on Blu-ray, and sometimes DVD if it's an older series. In that case I just tell my mom it's another "Japanese cartoon," and get an "oh, really, what about, ah, OK, that's interesting" response. I have actually studied Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish at the highest levels offered in college, and received top marks in all, so I know more than your average American about the cultures of most countries that speak those languages anyhow. I think my mom just sees me as very cultured, lol.

At first they were like "Wat", but now they're more like "Meh, if you like it, watch it."

My sister tries to troll me in good fun, sometimes, which just results in me trolling her back on the shows she watches.

In good fun, of course. :3

My family doesn't really care but people in general can mistake a lot of stuff that we see worth in for other, less fancy more and straightforward stuff. You shouldn't care about it.
