I think that they are both considered real animation but their styles are from two completely different countries
so both of them are equally good but since there different there will always be controversy between the two
Either way it will always depend on the individual's opinion

i like both. Though i haven't seen a good American cartoon come up in a while; Nickelodeon's gone to crap and i'm not a fan of that weird stuff cartoon network puts out nowadays (including that show with the blob characters, despite its popularity).

but i'll rewatch the 80s-90s-early 20s stuff over and over. i even have a favorite spongebob episode lol. Then of course Bugs Bunny and Popeye the Sailor Man and Tom & Jerry and all them are awesome too. and Scooby Doo

for new stuff, I'd say anime comes out on top. but cartoons are just usually silly anyway, so it's hard to compare the two regardless lol. well there's the superhero cartoons but i never found any of them that good except maybe TMNT.

If I'm being honest, I think a lot of American animation has higher production values and looks better. I tend to prefer the art and situations in Japanese animation more, though.

I sorta ambiguously answered this already, but I'm going to give a fool-proof answer and say that American animation cannot even come close to Our Anime hailing from Japan.

Well, as for my take on this, I like Japanese anime for TV series way better than American TV shows, but I like American animation for movies better than anime movies. Disney animated features always have a place in my heart, more so than many anime movies out there. So pretty much, my preference is the Japanese stuff for TV series, and American stuff for movies.

For me (as of this current time) I like anime more as I look for the story more than the animation. There are a few exceptions of course (*cough*Adventure Time*cough*)
For movies, well....I like both.

ummm I wonder why people say things like that, of course everything is not perfect and for me I grew up watching american animation and had no idea what anime was when I was a kid but then I got to know what anime was btw my first anime was Yu-Gi-Oh! The movie: Pyramid of Light but at that time I didnt know it was an anime and I liked it so much that I started drawing Pharaoh Yu-gi from there then years later some of my friends introduced me to naruto and said it was an anime and then slowly I started drifting towards japanese animation but just because I like anime now doesnt mean that I dont like american animation and I still watch some family guy etc and its fun but majority of my time is with anime

People always come up with "this is better than that" idea but we need to see the whole not just some part of it, everything got its pros and cons and thats what makes it unique

Each source has their own goodies and baddies, I'm not the kinda guy that's like "Oh anime will always be supreme over western". Or vice versa, that being said, neither of them have the upper hand.

I'm glad that there are reasonable answers for this question and not a lot of arguing over which is better. Thanks to everyone who gave me a solid answer so far.

They're targeted to different audiences. I can't see an American tired of whatever sitting down before bed to watch a depressing show like Anohana or Clannad (Which I personally love). And I can't see a Japanese sitting down to watch something like American Dad or Family guy.

I completely love Futurama. For me is the best show from American animation.
