Each and every year more anime is being simulcasted and made, but what are some classics or Iconic anime? I always hear titles like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, and the Dragon Ball series as being the classic and Iconic anime that really set up and defined what anime was. Are there any other Classics or Icons in anime?

Also, what are some Iconic anime moments? and What are things that always happen in every anime?

Thanks for the answers

I would say Samurai Champloo is a pretty iconic anime. Even my friends who don't watch anime still know what Samurai Champloo is.

For the US, I would have to say Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo!, and Sailor Moon. They, along with DBZ, basically set the tone on Toonami for anime and helped drag people to watch a genre like anime.

The entire Gundam universe is very iconic. As are most of Hayao Miyazaki's movies. You've also got Macross, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Akira, and One Piece is the biggest anime of all time in Japan. There's so many. Rurouni Kenshin, Code Geass, Death Note. On and on.

Baccano, Trigun, Pokemon, Digimon, The Big Three, Gintama. These all come to mind excluding what was already said.

Do you think there are any particularly memorable moments from these series? Something that people outside anime can talk about and is very well known.

From Gundam? The original is from 79 and is well well well well known for being the basis of mos real robot anime. Char Aznable is THE ace pilot, using his Red custom. Every red mech since has soke sort of trait based upon him! Usually speed.

But, outside of Japan? Niche.

He is a Char, the word Newtype.... stuff?

Zetas ending is famously dark.

While the Black Tri stars are super popular, i heard, in Japan.

If you know where to look, you have gundam references in a lot of anime, its surprising!

Robotic;notes acted like everyone knows how many vernier thrusters a Rick Dom has.
The world God Only Knows had a massive joke episode in which Keima reinacts the last episode of Gundam, right dowb to dialogue.

Gundam is ingrained into Japan... but but the west.

Mainstream stuffs:

Haruhi Suzumiya... people were doing those HaruHaru dance all the time during its peak period. And just how many people have created the religion, "Haruhi-sm"? and the SOS brigade, it inspired a lot of people around the world.

Lucky Star an anime where otakus can heavily relate to.

Hate to say this, but Sword Art Online, its impact was huge in the anime world. Wonder how the season 2 will do. I'm gonna watch it, but will drop it if they follow the same formulae as the first season. I'm not here for repetitive stuffs.

Non-mainstream stuffs:

Chihayafuru
, this anime redefined the sports genre, and introduced many people to the poetry of Japan.

Flowers of Evil... this is what happens when artists are allowed to express freely without fear of having to make a profit. A masterpiece that will surely inspire a lot of anime artists and storywriters in the future.

the most memorable from kenshin is the kyoto arc in general, the shinsengumi battle, the gambling incident with the yakuza, teacup breaking on kenshin head to protect kiyori, and the circus are moments that i always remember when watching the series.

toonami and adult swim mainly show main stream anime. depending on age to americans, these become iconic figures.

you can't forget big O, inuyasha, monster rancher, yu yu hakusho. theres plenty of iconic anime. o yea fooly cooly.

without a doubt the abridge yugioh series is a part of this. but yea, most iconic or will be anime will definately make its way to american channels. specically adult swim and toonami.

as for cliche's i am constantly updating my dead thread that i made as i come to them or remember to:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-848167/clichs-in-anime

most of the iconics that i believe in were cuz i didn't get a firm grasp on anime until i was way older, and grew up on toonami and adult swim with a little taste from fox for kids.

Was Accel World as big, though? I thought it was a little better SAO, but I thought SAO was overwhelmingly more popular.

I don't know if you've seen any of them, so I'm going to put spoilers, don't open if you haven't.
