Was Accel World as big, though?

It wasn't.

DVD/BD sales in Japan for SAO were in the low to high 20K range for the volumes I checked, while Accel World was in the high 4K to low 7K range. SAO also seems to have more related merchandise.

Accel World's sales would appear to justify a second series, but they aren't in the same "they'd be stupid not to" range as SAO.

That's what I figured. Thanks for the heads-up.

Do you think there are any particularly memorable moments from these series? Something that people outside anime can talk about and is very well known.

From Gundam? The original is from 79 and is well well well well known for being the basis of mos real robot anime. Char Aznable is THE ace pilot, using his Red custom. Every red mech since has soke sort of trait based upon him! Usually speed.

But, outside of Japan? Niche.

He is a Char, the word Newtype.... stuff?

Zetas ending is famously dark.

While the Black Tri stars are super popular, i heard, in Japan.

If you know where to look, you have gundam references in a lot of anime, its surprising!

Robotic;notes acted like everyone knows how many vernier thrusters a Rick Dom has.
The world God Only Knows had a massive joke episode in which Keima reinacts the last episode of Gundam, right dowb to dialogue.

Gundam is ingrained into Japan... but but the west.

Gundam being iconic in Japan but not out west is quite true. Unfortunate, but true. Gundam didn't have a global imprint until Gundam Wing, which was one of the softest efforts in Gundam's franchise.

There are iconic moments like Lalah dying coming between Gundam and Gelgoog, Ral dying in Gundam's hand, and the last battle where a beheaded Gundam and Zeong (reduced to a head) take each other out.

Zeta's the best series of the franchise. Starts dark and awesome, ends darker and more awesome.

A lot of the titles listed on this thread aren't really iconic, but more "hot for a minute."

I'm surprised no one mentioned Count of Cagliostro. It's iconic squared. Iconic director (Hayao Miyazaki) taking on an iconic franchise (Lupin III).

Steins;Gate Thrilling ride from the beginning to the end. I liked how the anime handled the idea of "time machines".

Cowboy Bebop Even though the characters were all different, they had something to contribute to the Bebop.

from what i remember yea, in the beginning only. but then SAO took it by storm.

Accel world had just as big of a hype as attack on titan, during the beginning. its one of those series that start strong but is loses steam.

SAO is definately more popular. aincrad is the game of fantasy for many gamers such as myself. Accel world was definately better in some context, but like i said alot of people got annoyed by the main characters voice and his behavior. even i got annoyed, someone who can sit through fillers happily even most naruto ones too.

I thought Gurren Lagann and School Days would've also made the list.
