There have been animes such as Ghost in the Shell that explore concepts behind the meaning of the question I present. We ask ourselves philosophical questions such as this, and we have yet to find a satisfactory answer. Personally, I don't think we could define ourselves as humans, because we are too complex to find the meaning behind ourselves. Discuss.

What makes us human is what we think and can depend on people. Personally. I som, etimes think humans aren't any different from wild beasts or lamps..
Humans are confusing existences. How can we discover all of this stuff? Why didn't a dog think about a wireless cell phone?
Why didn't cats just take over the world and dominate? Why don't they keep us as pets?
I feel like asking what makes us human is kind of the same thing as those questions I just inquired about........
We are a mess.

are ability to reason and use logic make us special , we tend to try to use whatever portion of our brain that we have to the fullest asking questions for the unknown. Our capacity and need to learn in finding problems and solving them to serve some practical means, is some of the things that make us humans different from lets say animals .

Free will isn't really real, though. Every decision you make is a product of the way that your brain responds to external stimuli, run through a filter of past experiences.
The way your individual brain functions is what decides the outcome of every thought and every impulse you have. And you can't control how your brain functions.

Then again, there are several other animals that are self aware.
Gorillas, crows, elephants, dolphins, etc.

Isn't that really the case for all species on earth, though?

Not really. Have you ever interacted with a dog before?
Dogs show emotion quite clearly. They can get happy, angry, sad, lonely and even jealous.
Many animals can.

The capacity to overcome the natural tendency to serve the self and only the self, and thus come in possession of a higher self.

To consciously decide (in the form of a decision, and not a mere reaction) to serve in the interest of another, even to the knowing detriment of oneself, is true love.

Also, humans can empathize- To imagine oneself in the position of another.
