I'm just curious to know what people thought of anime before they ever started watching it. And what made you decide to start watching it?

Personally, I thought that the type of people that watch anime were weirdos and obsessive (Blame the people I went to School with aha). Reading haters comments all over the internet put me off a great deal too. Also the animation style never really appealed to my younger self.

What got me into to anime was Attack On Titan. Say what you will about it being overrated, but to me, it was a God send. Thanks to that series, I now watch other anime

Depends on the genre. I may first consider the likelihood of it being another ripoff meant to leech cash. Upon review, I may instead see a worthy contribution.

I grew up watching anime as a child, so for the longest time, I associated it with western cartoons as being more for kids. but when I started watching anime again in high school, I quickly realized that there was not only anime aimed at children, but teenagers and even adults as well.

After watching a episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender, went onto the internet and saw some forums about if avatar was a cartoon or a anime.I didn't know what anime was back then, so I looked it up and then spotted some shows that I used to watch when I was younger. Then ended up at some website where they had list down the number of shows, read a few descriptions and became interested in some of them. I decided to watch Soul Eater cause I thought it looked like something that Tim Burton would make and I loved the show, then after soul eater, I then watched Death Note and I thought it was amazing. So my interest kept on growing and growing and now I still watch anime.

I didn't think anime was geared towards adults and teenagers, but made mostly for children. I grew up watching animes such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. That was until my friend showed me Fullmetal Alchemist, leading me to see what anime could be capable as a medium. My curiosity got the better of me, and I realized there were animes just as good and thought-provoking out there.

I knew exactly what anime was at the age of 7 because of a cousin who used to come 'round to my house in the holidays. He'd watch DBZ and Naruto on the TV and computer and sometimes I'd watch anime with him. So I knew that anime could be for mature audiences too.

In short, I thought anime was cool and that people who watched were really quirky (which to me is cool, awesome etc.)

I don't know what I thought of anime before I watched it because I didn't get a chance to think about it before I was introduced to it (I was too young)! ^.^

as a child i watched DBZ but i really thought that it wasn't considered an art form. i used to get upset when i was on deviantART and there'd be all these fanarts of anime stuff and i was mad 'cuz they were popular and considered art

obviously think differently now, have even spent hours looking at fanart of my favorite anime/manga. lol things really change.

I thought when I was like 7 that Yu-gi-oh! was a really weird American Cartoon. Then I started to watch Naruto which again I thought it was a weird American Cartoon with for some reason some of the openings were in japanese. Then I actually started researching naruto on the internet. Then I found out it was Anime from Japan and I was like, this stuff is not that bad.

Haha I was so dumb and I was a fucking asshole.

I watched Naruto, yet, thought all the other animes suck. And I thought 'otaku' was horrible because of what all the Koreans say (my ppl are horrible in some ways...) It's like I thought all the other animes were only for otakus, who have all the time to blow. I thought all anime that have romance in it, were for girls.

And now I watch all that moe & harem stuff with whole bunch of girls in it. And waste thousands of dollars on some 'stupid' shit, which makes me very happy

I guess I didn't have much if an opinion because I watched voltron and tformers as a kid so the style was similar. It was a natural transition when picking it back up with dbz, sailor, and cowboy bebop.

I didn't really see anime as anything. Watched Pokemon during my childhood, watched Deathnote during my teenage years, and really got into anime when I discovered the crunchyroll app on my Ipad. Before that, I didn't really know what it was. Now, to be honest, if someone tells me they are an otaku, I will think that they are likely to be a weirdo.

Hmm for me, I just considered Anime a different art style of cartoons. But I also was only aware of things that was available on TV here in the states: Naruto, DBZ, Gundam, One Piece, Pokemon, and things like that. I wasn't even really aware that there were hundreds of other shows out there when I was younger. Probably because I never thought of when I was younger looking up shows on the internet, if I did I probably would have been introduced to the whole thing A LOT earlier, and probably would of enjoyed it a lot more.

As for what got me into Anime... was back around October 2012 or so my friend who watched Anime asked if I wanted to watch a show with her while we killed some time hanging out. Was Baka and Test from FUNi, I enjoyed watching it so much that we ended up watching the entire series in one sitting other than to get up and eat food. Talked with her then about Anime, got some ideas of what to do and where to go to watch shows.

By February I had an account on FUNi and CR, and at this point after a year and few months since I started watching Anime I have seen ~700 series.

Half of the stuff I watch I never imagined me watching going into Anime. I thought I would stick with comedies, action, darker stories, and stuff like that, but some of my favorite series are moe or harem shows. Also never thought I would have gotten into Manga or start buying posters/wallscrolls and figurines.
