Recently my friend and I started watching anime together. After we watched a few different series together we started talking and he said that anime was a little too perfect. He gave examples like the school in Madoka Magica and also how unattractive anime characters are few and far between. I can understand that the school was pretty far fetched and a bit overly extravagant and so on, but I don't want to agree with him that anime is too perfect. what do you guys think?

Yes, it is.

If you're watching anime for realism... Welll...

Of course it is.

Yeah.
Just wanna say some of these characters' personalities are... too nice. Nobody is really that chivalrous in real life... but maybe that's why we're drawn to it...

it's like hollywood. they're not supposed to be realistic, they're supposed to be idealistic. it wouldn't sell otherwise.

Have a look at /flowers-of-evil and see if you still think there aren't many unattractive characters...

/ishida-asakura
Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakisho
Several Dragonball characters
Great Teacher Onizuka
Princess Jellyfish has several
Ponyo's dad
Doraemon
Accelerator from Railgun
Naruto
Hunter X Hunter characters
One Piece males
/rowdy-sumo-wrestler-matsutaro
Death Note "L"
Sgt Frog
Beelzebub

Sure, there is a lot of moe and bishie out there, but you're probably not looking in all the right places, I think.

not being realistic isn't the same thing as being perfect. I know that anime isn't realistic, but that doesn't mean that it's perfect.

Perfect? How'd you mean, like going too well or something cause there are some faults in anime shows although in my opinion I wouldn't call it perfect, fun but not perfect.

Basically what asharka says.

You will find those "not-so perfect" characters in more mature series. Not everything is like KyoAni.

Far better than reality? Hell yeah.

Sadly that is pretty much fiction in a nut shell, though. Look at the influx of super-hero movies in the last decade for evidence of how characters look. It is always about the ideal.

However, that should not affect the context of the series itself. If the content, characters, story, etc. are good, then it really shouldn't matter, either way.

If an anime were filled with a bunch of ugly characters would you really enjoy it. Or just been thinking about how ugly the character design is the whole time.

I agree with asharka you're just not looking in the right places.
(Attack on Titan I personally think doesn't have all perfect looking characters.)

Shoujo: is one of the main culprits of Mary Sue characters. Especially when it is in a slice of life scenario. But what do you expect from it? Most Shoujo consists of love triangles...and most people want to see attractive men.
Shonen: can be a little bit better about it...sometimes. Often times shonen makes their characters to perfect maybe not in appearance(maybe big boobed women) but with their powers they are too perfect in the end.Like superheroes being too perfect.
Harem anime is 99.8% fan service so the characters often have the same formula. Perfect, sexy, or generic harem stereotypes to get people interested in it.

Sure most anime has idealized bodies like big breasted skinny women and muscular men but not all of them. It's just kind of...easier to draw them with scrawny bodies.
Same goes for personalities and plot. But scenarios are purposefully made more extravagant like a book of fiction.
Look at more mature themed anime and perhaps you'll find less perfect characters and plot.
