If an anime were filled with a bunch of ugly characters would you really enjoy it. Or just been thinking about how ugly the character design is the whole time.

Ugly character design and ugly characters are not always the same.

Characters can be ugly but have good design to them. Berserk is one example of grotesque, gritty and ugly people. There aren't any attractive women in there. Caska is admirable as a strong female character, but her short hair probably isn't attractive to a lot of guys. Griffith as a pretty boy doesn't' attract straight guys either. Yet, as you know it, Berserk attracts a huge audience of men.

Well, you were watching Madoka Magica which is meant to give off a 'perfect' kind of feel until the whole 'having magical powers isn't as fun as I thought' thing.

Isn't the show supposed to seem 'perfect' so it's more dramatic when bad/emotional stuff happens?

(Haven't actually watched the show, just heard about it from friends)

Character design is fine as attractive. In the end it really isn't the character design that matters but the personality.

I don't think any of these girls is any less visually attractive than any other. However, based on the events of the story, I can without a doubt say that I am by far the most attracted to Charlotte, and I am actually annoyed by Rin, making me not attracted to her at all.

Now as far as personalities go, idealistic personalities can sometimes ruin a story, however if those idealistic personalities mesh well with the story, then there really is no problem.

People are going to probably hate me for saying this, but I rather like Ichika. It may not be apparent at first, but I have watched IS quite a few times. Ichika is decently strong, but weaker than any single heroine. He accepts that he is weaker, but wants to get stronger. He also actually seems somewhat aware of the advances being made toward him, but just isn't 100% sure whether they mean friendship or romance. Ichika is actually not that bad of a main character.

I'm far too familiar with tragic/dark/horror anime and manga to agree. Once you get out of the fluffy genres and shows, you'll see that plenty of anime worlds can be considered down-right horrific, and that there are not-so-attractive characters.

I think it depends on the anime, really. There are plenty of series where each character has a flaw and not everything is lucky, great, or perfect at all. Of course, many school life and romance series tend to be a bit on the verge of perfect, but I suppose that's because they're supposed to be feel-good shows, or whatever it's called.

I don't think anime is perfect. There are some series that I personally think are near perfection but others will find flaws to them.

Can it be both?

no, because every anime has flaws? i can find flaws even in my personal favorites.

besides i've seen my fair share of "plain" characters. well maybe more in manga than anime, but still.

I don't think so... Idealism and Realism are pretty opposite of one another.

In reality, people are imperfect and have flawed appearances and personalities. However, idealistic characters are created specifically to not have those imperfections. Ideal women and men are examples of how realistic men and women should be, even though it is impossible to achieve those standards. To have a realistic and idealistic person/thing would be like having perfection and imperfection at the same time. The two contradict each other.

All anime's to have there own special look to them, one can look realistic as a animated show can be. and the other can just be out of the wild

He gave examples like the school in Madoka Magica and also how unattractive anime characters are few and far between. I can understand that the school was pretty far fetched and a bit overly extravagant and so on, but I don't want to agree with him that anime is too perfect. what do you guys think?
Have a look at /flowers-of-evil and see if you still think there aren't many unattractive characters...

/ishida-asakura
Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakisho
Several Dragonball characters
Great Teacher Onizuka
Princess Jellyfish has several
Ponyo's dad
Doraemon
Accelerator from Railgun
Naruto
Hunter X Hunter characters
One Piece males
/rowdy-sumo-wrestler-matsutaro
Death Note "L"
Sgt Frog
Beelzebub

Sure, there is a lot of moe and bishie out there, but you're probably not looking in all the right places, I think.

Personally I think L is hot, and Ponyo's dad has a certain hobo-like charm, but maybe that's just me .....

There are lost of anime out there where the whole story is just "perfect stuff happens to perfect people" (I'm looking at you shoujo and you harem ) but that's not to say there isn't a wealth of shows with people and situations that aren't idealised. These are often the ones fans enjoy the most too, which makes it odd that there aren't more of them. In WATAMOTE, for example, the whole story is based around the flaws and ugliness of the main character. There's a show to check out if you want flawed people

We should keep in mind that anime is fictional based. Drawings of the sort. It's animation.

They just want attractive character so you'll watch the damn thing. Why are a lot of actors really good looking? uh because people want to look at thing that look good. It's as simple as that. Anime is far from perfect if you look at some "anime like" still art from very high end artists it will always out rank moving animation character designs.
