Animes people misjudge

It's not very uncommon for people to misjudge the genre of a show by looking at the appearances.

I'll start with something most people already know about

Madoka (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) looks like something little girls would watch if you look at all the posters and stuff, but it's definitely not. Madoka started a trend for like all the magical girl animes having dark stories.

Infinite Stratos
Since this one is mecha, people expect something like Gundam or Evangelion. But Infinite Stratos is mainly harem. There are some actions and storyline with villains and stuff, but you are mostly gonna see a bunch of girls trying to flirt with the clueless main character. It's not something you would watch for kickass action. But it is funny if you watch it. And the girls are so lovely.

The World God Only Knows (My personal favorite)
Okay, so this is an anime about a hardcore dating sim otaku conquering girls. No, seriously, that's what it's about. But if that's the only thing you heard, that probably sounds lame. Plus a lot of people hate on harem. But trust me, The World God Only Knows is very different from other harems. And even the people who hate harem, still like The World God Only Knows. When you look at most of the other harems, all the girls automatically like the main character but the main character is very clueless. Keima is very different. He has to make girls who hate him with passion, to fall in love with him, or else he dies due to contract with a demon. Their memories of it get wiped after it's over so it's not gonna be like School Days. Plus it's hilarious.

The World God Only Knows is devided into 3 big arcs: Conquest arc, Goddesses arc, and the Past arc. Conquest arc covers manga volumes 1~12 (but only 1~4 animated), Goddesses arc covers 13~19 (huge time skip in the anime but they cover it briefly), and the Past arc covers 20~26. (Not animated yet) When you get to the goddesses arc, you will see huge change in the anime and see how serious it gets. Thinking of it still gives me goosebumps. That's how good it was. And please know that they put tremendous effort into the songs used in the anime. I collect blu-rays of their concerts and have a card signed by one of the seiyuus (Touyama Nao)

Love Live, Idol [email protected], K-ON, etc.
I've seen a lot of people thinking these animes are for girls.
Hell no. They have like the biggest fanbase of guys. Love Live has the craziest fans as far as I've seen. This guy pre-ordered 55 copies of the same blu-ray, which the total came to be over 270000 yen ($2700 USD). This high school student ordered 100 copies of the same CD. Their live concert tickets sell out so fast, they have them on online auctions for extremely high prices. (people resell them apparently...) A front row seat was sold for 410000 yen ($4100 USD) on Yahoo auction.

I hope we all end up learning something from this thread

The anime I severly misjudged was Cowboy Bebop. A clerk kept telling me about it when it first came out, but I did not like the art work and the cowboy them I thought it had so I did not buy it. (Looks at self-BAKA!)

One Piece. A lot of people think it's a "kiddie anime", but it most definitely is NOT. I've learned from experience that there is almost no such thing as a "kiddie anime".

(The Hunter X Hunter fans should be posting in this topic shortly.)

For me, the big shock was watching the original Golion after seeing it as Voltron. They had to cut a lot to make that show acceptable for U.S. kids.

Vividred Operation was amazing and I'm standing by that. Fate/kaleid as well.

And the first season of Chuunibyou wasn't just generic KyoAni moeblob, it actually had an engaging story and characters.

Pet Girl of Sakurasou is one of them.

Honestly, I didn't know what I was getting myself into. Someone told me to watch it. And initially I thought it'd be unoriginal and boring. Of course I seemed to have found the first few episodes as lame. Then we see this transformation (I think I'm overemphasizing this) and I realize that this show is definitely not a "same old same old" anime. Certain unoriginal elements were still present, I'll give you that, but it was really different in terms of goal setting and the character's dreams.

Oh man... I don't know if other people feel the same way, but Neon Genesis Evangelion was so much more than I expected. I know it's a well known mecha anime, but I brushed it off as just another shoot-em'-up mecha until I finally watched it. It blew my mind.

Here I am!

Hunter x Hunter. You think it's just a cute lil shounen about a cheery kid who likes to fish?

It is. For a while. And then it becomes one of the best anime of all time (WHOO THERE I SAID IT)

Non Non Byori;

It seems like just a standard moeblob, but it's actually just as much about sadness and isolation and a dying way of life.

Black Bullet if your looking for something currently airing. I watched the first episode expecting to laugh at how bad it was and was blown away. I expected tons of super cliched writing and it to be uncomfortably ecchi and it just wasn't. The show makes fun of those usual tropes while developing endearing characters. I'm rambling, I love that show entirely too much.

Lol in Korea, they made Shin-chan very acceptable for kids to see. And parents will literally show it to kids on purpose because it's hilarious. And when I watched shin-chan on Adult Swim after I moved to US, my mom freaked out.

I almost passed off No Game No Life as an ecchi, otaku pandering show, almost. It's actually really well done! The animation is beautiful, the main characters are really likeable, and the games they play are out of this world! (see episode 6 to understand pun)
