Once when we were having spring clearance and were super FAWKING busy, this guy comes in and demands to know how much this pop up shelter was. The display up front didn't have a price tag for whatever reason (probably someone ripped it off, whatever). Anyway one of my managers tries to help him in between helping like 5 other people. The guy doesn't like how long it's taking and starts berating my poor (in his 70s) manager who feebly keeps saying "Sir, I don't have to take this." Later he comes through my line with the pop up shelter and keeps asking me things like "So what's the deal? Do only idiots work here?" he's really loud too. Then he snaps at my other cashier "What are staring at?? Can I help you??" I try to give him his receipt and change (which was like over 3 bucks) and he refuses to take either. That guy was crazy. Another customer said he "needed Jesus".

I can't believe how nice you are. Back in 2004 I had one of my licensees being a dick to a new trainee. He was trying his best to bully and intimidate her and was way too close and screaming at her that she was stealing money from him by interrupting his day and that as a government worker she was just a useless parasite that was trying to put him out of business. I got between them, took her hand and led her out to the car and had her sit down. I then went back inside and before the licensee could open his mouth, I explained what was going to happen. He was going to be shown in violation for refusal to allow an examination. I was going to site every violation and assess every fine that I could possible imagine. His licensee was now going to be revoked, and I was going to personally contact his bank and inform them of his license revocation. I then went back to the office and did all that. It took me two months of work, but it happened and the industry still talks about how incredibly ignorant and thick-headed he was.

The customer isn't always right, way too often he's an angry dick that needs to be shown the door and never let back in. It makes the good customers feel safe and keeps them coming back.

Damn.

My revenge is always so petty.

(scenario if a customer pisses me off)
Me: Do you have a rewards card?
Them: Not on me. My phone number is... -rattles off phone number-
Me: -types in the wrong number on purpose-

One night recently, I was ringing out an elderly couple who wanted to pay by check, and get some cash back, I finished ringing their items at like 2 minutes til midnight, finished with them 5 seconds to midnight. (one of the CSM's palm pilots was left at my register so I could actually keep a close eye on the time due to having to change out the til at midnight.) It was Saturday going into Sunday which meant the cut-off time for alcohol is midnight instead of 1am like usual, and when I told the next people it was too late, the lady got all sorts of mad, yelling at me, had me call over a manager, yelled at the manager who more or less said "yeah that's too bad" threatened to call corporate. (as if that would do anything for her) During the whole thing she kept saying that she used to work in customer service and that she wasn't stupid, but I had to bite my tongue to disagree with her and that she was stupid, also said she was going to a lake resort and would not make any other stops, and, if she had actually worked in customer service, she would know that the customers who throw little temper tantrums are the ones that get talked about the most. I know I've talked about her to several customers and we've had some laughs about how stupid she was.

Having said that, I was actually extremely uncomfortable during the situation as it was happening.

I worked in retail for almost 7.5 YEARS!! How I survived--I have no idea. When I worked the sales floor a woman chewed me out (I don't even remember the reason why since it was so long ago) basically saying I was an idiot, she was a sales manager when she was16 at some competing retail store (yeah, so what, lady?)--and she insulted me in front of a manager. Needless to say, after the customer left, a co-worker noticed something was wrong and asked if I was OK--and then the floodgates went off (read: I started bawling and I couldn't stop for a while. The lady was absolutely mean and cruel).

Eventually, I switched to logistics. I'm a much better fit for logistics, but it wasn't without its problems. A manager asked me to clean the Men's Bathroom (a male manager no less). I am female. There was NO WAY I could've prepared for what happened in there. A #2 in the urinal, stuff on the wall--the smell I was VERY thankful I hadn't eaten anything recently because I wouldn't have been able to keep it down. I really should have refused to do it, but since I'm a nice person, I cleaned it up. Luckily, that only happened once, but that was truly awful. Yet--I'd STILL rather clean THAT over dealing with cruel customers. What does that say about me?

Retail is just awful. For the stuff you have to deal with, the pay should be a LOT higher. I'm talking about the peons, NOT the management. Managers were usually people that shouldn't have been managers in the first place that loved to hide in their offices and do as little work as possible.

Not surprisingly, I didn't like too many managers. Oh, and trying to push people to open the stupid store credit cards--I HATE IT when people ask ME, so I felt it was rude to ask customers to open a store card, BUT if you weren't the one person opening 100 new accounts every month, something was wrong with you. I never liked that aspect much either. It didn't help your "raises" were based upon how successful you were with getting people to open the store credit cards.

If it's not obvious, I'm not a huge fan of retail.

My best retail work related horror story has nothing to do with actual retail but it was pretty messed up regardless.
I used to work at a souvenir stand at a zoo and one day while leaving for my lunch break I had to stop a father who was balancing a stroller with his kid in on the top of the fence to the hippo pit.
Some people shouldn't be parents.

I always hate it when an obese pack of 'Muricans shuffles up to my desk with a cart brimming full of candy, soda, Cheetos etc then try to pay with EBT (which we don't accept). I inform them of the policy and sometimes they get all pissed at me like I came up with said policy. It's like, why didn't you ASK if we accept it first thing and save everyone some time and embarrassment. Now we have to put that cart full of shit away. Just excellent.

I've worked in retail for 14 years in the same building. (The building has been there for 15 years!) One time I was on one of our 3 foot ladders trying to put up overstock on the top shelf. This elderly lady (75-80ish) with a humpback was pushing a cart down the aisle I was in. Because of her back it made her tend to look down instead of forward so she was looking at the bottom of her cart instead of where she was going. She ran the cart into my ladder, backed up and ran it into my ladder harder. She said "Why can't I get this cart to go?" I said "Ma'am if you'll wait just a second I'll move the ladder out of your way." She jumped at hearing my voice and had to turn and twist in order to look up to see me. She said "OH! I'm so sorry!" I just smiled and told her that was alright as I got down and moved the ladder. And as for finding poop in weird places in the bathroom try finding it on a store shelf! It was on a shelf that was 4 feet high. A small child did not do this!!!
