It's a long rant I put on Facebook later that day so let me know if you want a link to my page for details. But long story short I was on my way to work but had some time to kill so I walk into B.B. to look for a phone. My parents wanted me to look and choose one so they could purchase it for me. I was there for about 45 minutes to an hour and during the whole time I was getting glares from guests and the staff working there. People were mumbling under their breaths and whispering to their spouses while looking at me. It got bad enough to the point that right before I was about to leave, a team member there (who was obviously working with the first couple for what looked like a while) stopped his consultation with them to "help" me. I told him what I was interested in and he tried to get me to buy a cheaper phone. Trying my best not to make a scene or waves I left.

This unfortunately isn't an isolated incident. I have worked there in the past and they are trained to profile people. The first purpose is making sure you don't walk out empty handed but the second and far more disturbing purpose is to identify potential thieves and keep an eye on them. The LP person will even flag someone over the radio based upon profiling alone. If you ever have them excessively attempt to "help" you they are thinking you might be a thief.

I got one. (Acutally I have several...but I'm just gonna share one.)

I was working a closing shift at a store who has something about "delivering the treasure hunt" as part of their motto.
The store had been closed with the doors locked for 15-ish minutes and the closing manager told me to go check how much stuff was on the floor downstairs. While walking in the shoe aisles I noticed one had an especially large pile of clothes next to all the shoes on the floor. I took a closer look and noticed the "pile" had hair and hands.

After a WTF moment I called my manager and told her over the store phone that
"There is a person on the floor in the shoe isle."
"You're bleeping kidding me."
"No, no I'm not! There is a person on the floor. What do I do?"
"I'll be right down."

The manager woke the person up. They smelled like alcohol and said they couldn't find their shoes. They proceeded to grab random pairs off the rack and try them on. My manager and I looked around and couldn't find their shoes. Then the manager sent me off to help with another part of the store. Later that night I asked what happened and she told me that she finally just kicked the person out cause their shoes were probably gone before they came in.

Shit... Exactly what do they ask you to look for? I can't imagine it's very politically correct.

One time at the grocery store I had a guy hopped up on pills in my line and kept asking me out and flirting with me. He said he wouldnt pay for his food until I said yes so I told my manager and well you know cops and kicked out. Its not really a horror story but it was horribly annoying to me.

This one older lady is always a bitch when she comes in. Most recently, I started ringing her out, then she starts complaining that none of the baby powders have price stickers. I scan it and tell her it's $1.70. Certain products don''t have stickers because they're NVOs and the factory barcode will scan instead of one we specially put on it. But there should still be a shelf tag. So to rule everything out and also because most customers are unobservant, I ask her if she looked for a shelf tag. She then sneers and looks at me like I'm something on the bottom of her shoe and says "Oh yes, I know how to shop." She then goes on to say how I better fix it (not my job) or else we'll lose profits etc. C*nt.

Officially its the way the person dresses themselves, baggy clothes and jackets are red flags... but they have a tendency to flag minorities even when dressed rather normal. It really depends on the the management and LP staff but having a system in place like that allows them to have an excuse for this type of behavior.

Every customer is supposed to be categorized as one of about 8 different profiles and it includes just about every stereotype imaginable... to determine technical knowledge, income, personality, morals... all based upon how they are dressed and how old they look and what race they are.

Things might have changed since then but this was the case in 2008.

It's kind of annoying when you don't have a lot of money, and there is no price tag on the item or on the shelf.

I know that all too well. Long story short this crazy guy accused me of being all sassy at him and going "mmmhmmm" when all I did was clear my throat. He asked for corporate's number and my name. A manager was there and heard everything so obviously nothing came of that but yeah, crazy people man.

How about a reverse horror story? ok, maybe not horror, but definitely horrible...

So, we have this manager at my store. She's a total bitch. Doesn't do shit, on cell phone or sitting in office all day. Never stops talking (to the point i wanna stab my ears. I have bad hearing btw, and still hear her from the stock rooms -.- ). But anyhoo. One day a couple weeks ago, this guy and his wife came in. They placed their order and ended up waiting almost 15 minutes. After finally getting their food, he asked for a salt packet, and asked if he'd have to wait 15 minutes for that as well. Manager got snippy with him and told him she was having a bad day and needs to understand that. Then told him if he's going to be rude he needs to leave and never come back.

This isn't the first time she's done similar bs, but you could murder someone in the store and not get fired. :/ I don't think anything was done about it. It drives me nuts that people can get away with stuff in our store. This is my 4th customer service job, 2nd time at Mcd's. Never in the last 14 years have I ONCE been able to treat a customer rudely and not get reprimanded for it. Hell, half the crud our employees do got me suspended once at previous jobs!

Coworkers can be the worst. And like at your job, almost no one gets fired where I work. Case in point, we have one older lady cashier. She's rude, crass and lazy as hell. She once rang someone up with one hand while eating Cheeto puffs with the other. I shit you not.

Lately, my job has been pushing customer service. We're supposed to bend over backwards for people regardless of what they ask for. It can be the most insane thing and they expect us to find a way to make these people happy. Which, yes, that is part of retail and I understand the goal of keeping loyal customers. Blah, blah, blah. But the customer is NOT always right. There are some crazy, horrible, people who want nothing but to complain and yell at you for the most absurd things.

I have an older customer who comes in and argues prices, just to argue, no other reason. He claims the listed price is wrong, then goes on a rant about how it's cheaper at <Insert Other Store> and how we're robbing people. Asks if we can do price matching, which we have never done, goes out of his way to explain how stupid I am for not doing it. Like I make the company policy... This is a weekly thing I have to deal with. He almost purposely finds me above everyone else working the sales floor. I just don't understand what he plans to accomplish with this weekly tantrum. It boggles my mind.

Sometimes, I help bag groceries. It's not my job. I'm not generally asked to do this service by my workplace. I don't work near the registers. If I see they need help, I have no issue jumping in. One such day, I jumped in to help this lady's son bag the groceries since she was busying doing whatever and the other baggers were swamped. Half way through bagging the lady noticed her son was helping, snatched him over to her by the arm and looked him dead in the face saying "Don't help him do that, he's the Help. It's his job." I just, I can't even. This happened like five years ago and that lady's face when she said it still angers me. She had this ugly sneer and I really kind of felt bad for the kid. He looked embarrassed.

Not all costumers are like that, I've met some sweet people. There are those who I think have been in retail or understand that employees are people too. It's always nice to feel like someone really appreciates the fact you go out of your way to help them. The negative events tend to cloud that sometimes though.

My friends experiences:

One works at Auto Zone and this man threw a whole shelve of hats at my friend because he said they didn't have any diapers for sell. (really? at a car parts shop???)

Another friend worked at JC Penny and this lady was looking for the size 13's but you know how jeans are separated into style like flares, capris, ect. She asked what style she wanted so she can get the size but the lady just yelled "I DON'T CARE, I JUST WANT SIZE 13 JEANS CAN'T YOU LOOK ON YOUR COMPUTER TO FIND THEM" and when she randomly plucked a size 13 pair of jeans the lady threw a fit by saying "THESE ARE FAT GIRL JEANS, ARE YOU IMPLYING I'M FAT" , god bless my friend lol.

My experiences:

I was working at Hot Topic and I saw a man who wanted to try on a Marvel themed bra. That was kinda horrific but I couldn't say no since he ended up buying it..... But awesome at the same time :D

Another time was when I was folding shirts, and this guy was literally an imp from hell trying to make my day horrible. After every shirt I folded he picked it up, unfolded it, and threw it back on top of the other shirts. Sigh. I asked him if he needed anything and he said "No, just looking at these shirts" and he continued unfolding and throwing them on the ground now. Then I told him I was folding them and if he could please stop and he just looked at me like I was crazy and swiped all the shirts off the table and stomped away.

.... Why oh why.
