she got her wings?? i didn't even know.. i thought there was only the 2 seasons .. wwhaaaat sounds like i have some catching up to do

Yeah, there are four seasons now with a fifth scheduled for some time next year. The beginning and ending of the third season are generally considered low points for the series, with things happening more for the toy line than for the plot, but the fourth season is generally pretty great.

I will say this

I'm not surprised people wouldn't like the show or the fandom cause well people always have problems with things

But honestly the hate with MLP is so out of proportion at times
The Store Hot Topic once had a drawing over their facebook page where they were giving away 5 limited edition figures of the character Vinyl Scratch (or DJ Pon3) that had been some sort of convention exclusive.
I went on their page to enter (cause why not I actually quite like the Vinyl Scratch, one of my favorite background characters) and people were loosing it.

You had the usual insult the fandom crap, and then when people got tired of that they started going on about how Hot Topic wasn't worth shopping at anymore if they were going to sell MLP stuff

Ok I'll be honest it was a long time ago at this point but it was practically unbelievable how much people were blowing it out of proportion

Well I suppose you can limit it to shows without violence, but that would pretty much cut the anime fans in half or worse. A lot of these people may be the people bashing MLP, which are the people you're trying to reach out to, yes? It seems kind of strange to limit it in this way.

Anyway everything else you said seems on the mark. On your other forum people said anime was weird, as in a brony forum? I can definitely see that. Since many of us get into the scene when we're very young, the whole loli echi weird anime tropes don't get to us like they might have if we chose to watch anime later in our lives. I'd probably think anime was a little weird if I was introduced to it today, and possibly think brony was less weird. So upon rethinking the topic, you've changed my mind just a bit there. HOWEVER, if I was to introduce someone into anime myself, I wouldn't use shows with such tropes. That's an advantage brony does not have in this aspect.

And I myself understand very thoroughly that things aren't always what they seem, and that things aimed at children can also be enjoyed by adults. I'm not so shallow as to believe otherwise. I was speaking in general and for others. Since you're asking why our communities butt heads i'm just giving you possible explanations. None of them are really what I directly think of the two fandoms.

I'm not against MLP fans. Even bronies. I still think that they're normal people regardless. No need for hatred. One of my friends is a brony, and one of em are against em. If you like MLP, you like MLP. And that's fine.

it took me a Google search and a matching of forum images to Google images to realize what MLP stood for.
I cant say i know any My little pony fans other than my 3 year old niece and one of my nephews 9 year old female friend.

If some one likes my little pony, more power to them. As an anime fan still new to anime, i have an indifferent view on mlp. comparing it to anime (even non violent) isn't an easy thing to do. However, comparing it to something like Hamtaro or PrettyCure (or other kids demographic shows) is alot easier. i still could not judge it because i have not seen any Hamtaro, PrettyCure, or MLP episode all the way through.

Personally I love pandas, kitties, puppies, koalas, squirrels, children, bunnies, stuffed animals or anything that can be cute and cuddly all in the same way. Only a few think I'm weird (mainly because i'm a guy), but that's only the ones that don't really know me. I'm pretty sure this can be taken the same way to certain people as being an adult MLP fan is for others

to each is own. if your'e overly obssessed, then thats kinda weird. but me, i can't see myself watching MLP. i once got insanely drunk (like blacked out) and decided to try to watch MLP. and even then i was like, "why in God's name am i trying to watch this????". so i guess even in the point of not remembering anything at all (my friends told me what happened) i guess i still wasn't down to watch MLP.

MLP isn't my cup of tea, but it isn't a bad thing that other people like it. I don't mind the fandom. Even if it's grown men. Just let them love what they want. Stop letting it affect you and stop being a rude troll about it. Stop letting their happiness be a disease to you.

Well, I was mainly doing that because if the more action-oriented anime fans just don't like slice-of-lifey girly stuff in general, why would it bother them so much? I mean, it wouldn't explain the whole "we anime fans are better than bronies" thing I've seen around before. Either way I see what you mean, I just cut it because I don't see any reasonable way to find common grounds between My Little Pony and Psycho Pass.

Nah it wasn't a brony forum. Even if I've seen posts around from bronies against all the kawaii stuff, most bronies in my experience are unsurprisingly pretty damn tolerant and open-minded about this kind of thing, given all the unwarranted shit they get for doing something people don't understand. But no it was an RTS forum where there was a lot of animosity against MLP and anime both, though strangely the latter were the softer target actually because the anime community there was less tight-knit and the moderators had started to give no tolerance towards anti-brony flaming/trolling.

And yeah, my first thread here was "how to get people into anime", because it's like navigating a minefield that's different with each person :P

Well cool, I'm glad we agree. I didn't think you were assaulting MLP fans to start with, lol.

lmao, I actually have a solid mate who's a bouncer part-time. He became a fan of the show while sitting in a room with a severe hangover, ended up watching one episode then half of the first season in a single day. Like any other good pony-cultist, I will warn you of the evils of starting with the first couple of episodes, but if you found it to be absolute trash then I doubt you'd like any of it anyway

I feel that bronies are pretty awful--way below the creepiest anime fans--and I say this as someone who loves and enjoys the show, and frequently posts on a message board dedicated to the show.

Bronies have taken a show for girls, made by a feminist, promoting feminist ideals, and somehow made it about them. They've taken imagery from the show or from fan artists or what have you and distorted it to spread misogyny, depict rape, and all kinds of other reprehensible shit. They screamed bloody murder when their favourite rape blog (which had something like 12k followers) got taken down by Tumblr and started harassing a 17-year-old rape survivor because 1) she reported it, and 2) she had the GALL to tell people that, hey, maybe all this rape and misogyny and shit in the MLP fandom is a bad thing.

And the worst of it is that almost nobody seems to step up and go "Wow guys, this is pretty fucking awful shit", and the ones that do get shouted down by assholes who have absolutely zero self-awareness. The most popular personalities in the community turn a blind eye to the awfulness, giving their silent approval of what's happening around them as they blog or create art or whatever.

Bronies are terrible.

it's not that i will hate it. it's just i feel like i can see other shows and be like, "yeah i can dig this". with MLP, i can't say anything about it because i haven't seen it at all (aside from all the YTPs that show has been in). so maybe one day i'll be dead from alcohol poisoning and actually have the guts to watch it but until then i'll just enjoy my watamote haha

lol, I read a rant blog post that sounded a bit like this, and it opened my eyes to some of the darker parts of the fandom which I'm pretty well-insulated from, because I just really hang out in quiet brony spots with some of the coolest peeps I know on the net, so usually I'm barely even aware of the tumblr fan stories and things like that. Pretty awful.

However, I will say that your comments make it unfortunately seem like you've been spending so much time knee deep in the creep that you can't remember what the fresh, clean air of genuine, simple enjoyment of the show was like. I'd advise you to stop concerning yourself with these twats and find a better place to base yourself :D

Aside from this, I really don't find such things surprising. I guess it's more noticeable because unlike a lot of anime and other things, MLP tends to have feminist themes and tropes, so it seems more wrong. But really it's just typical behaviour the Men's Rights crowd indulges in, while rape pr0nz itself is too widespread to be tied specifically to the brony fandom - I mean the ratio of rape hentai out there featuring characters from regular anime is scarily high, but it would be idiotic to try to lambast anime fans or even hentai watchers because of that fact.

As for personalities not praising the taking down of tumblrs or the cease-and-desist orders from Hasbro, I think that comes to the fact that even if they have nothing to do with what was taken down, they're seeing things from the perspective of creative fans who themselves feel very threatened by things getting removed when Hasbro decides it doesn't approve of them. It's all part of a big struggle over creative freedoms that's raging across the internet these days.

In what way have bronies made the show "all about them"? Did they prevent toys from being made for the little girls? Did they alter the content of the show to make it unsafe for children? Did they somehow prevent the television signal from arriving at houses where girls lived? Or are you referring to the hundreds of thousands of dollars they've donated to children's charities, or the conventions they set up independently (and subsequently gave children preferential treatment at)?

I've already covered pornography, so moving on to where you're talking about what I presume to be the DWM "movement" and PinkiePony? This will take a while and most people won't want to read it, so

Meanwhile there are several blogs dedicated to calling out bad things in the fandom. poniesforparents, broniesagainstbullshit, and askasanebrony to start with. They devote about equal time to calling out shitty things done by bronies and getting that shit taken down, reporting on charity drives and other works for good in the fandom, and debunking the (mountains) of lies and misrepresentations churned out by the anti-brony "movement" attempting to make things look worse than they are (like the photoshopped search results making it look like porn is everywhere, the claims that voice actresses were molested at conventions despite all the actresses in question vehemently denying that such a thing ever happened, and most recently a poorly put together self-insert fanfic by saintchesire about the completely fictional attempted abduction of a little girl at BABScon). They're also where SafeSearch Wrap-Up started, the regular sweeping through google search results to report things that should be behind nsfw filters but aren't, and the reason why it's so much more difficult to stumble upon pony porn than porn from almost any other show. As a matter of fact, bronies are the only fandom I've ever heard of actually calling out the bad parts of the group instead of accepting them as internet culture and moving on.

This thread has been an interesting read, since I haven't noticed much bronie or MLP hate on CR, which is the only anime forum I frequent. MLP or anime isn't discussed on the few other forums I frequent, so I guess I'm just not exposed to the hate some feel for both fandoms.

My wife and I enjoyed the first couple of seasons of MLP, but neither of us would consider ourselves big enough fans to call ourselves bronies. It is another show that we enjoyed watching together among many others. While the plots are fairly simplistic, the animation and humor is great. And you got to love a show that has a Bioshock Infinite Easter egg embedded in one of their episodes. The producers know there is an older audience watches that show and puts some things in there for them as well. I doubt many 9 year old girls played Bioshock Infinite and would have understood the Easter egg, even if they spotted it in the episode.

The fan art from the MLP fandom strikes me as being in line with fan art from other fandoms. The majority of it fits with the show and there is a minority of it that sexualizes the characters. It doesn't bother me that the sexual stuff exists as long as it is kept on sites that are clearly adult in nature so are easily screened out, but I don't find it interesting at all. *laughs* While I can find a pretty cat of fox girl sexy as hell, ponies are more of a turn of for that regard in that regard. I do enjoy some of the fan art and loved the MLP mash-ups I've seen on youtube.

I think the hate there is for bronies comes from people not understanding them and a knee jerk reaction to look at things that don't fit your view of society as wrong. Men and adults are suppose to act in certain ways and like certain things and MLP doesn't fit in these categories. Add that it is the small percentage of the fandom that is into the sexual side of it that gets all the press, which means that people who won't check things out for themselves only have the sensationalized view of the fandom presented by Fox and other media outlets.

Some of the hate from anime fans may be from the fact that bronies/MLP fandom are currently lower in the geek Fandom hierarchy than the anime fandom currently is. Anime fans got beat up for awhile as being the sick geek fandom and now they have someone they can turn around and beat up on as being weirder than they are. There always seems to be one geek fandom that is targeted as the one everyone beats up on. For awhile it was trekkies, for a long time it was furries, anime fans had their own stint at the bottom and now it is MLP fans. It's like the kid who was the one who always got picked on and now there is someone else lower than him in the school social ranking and he joins in picking on that kid to be part of the in crowd instead of displaying understanding on what it is like to be the one everyone beats up on.
