The other was from my cousin. Pretty much the same stuff about kiddie crap, unfortunately for him in my family it is more or less an unspoken rule, especially between the guys, to fight out our differences. So I punched my cousin in the stomach, dragged him to a chair, tied him to it, and then forced him to watch an entire marathon of Fairy Tail.

Guess who is now a fan of Fairy Tail and digging deeper than probably even I do into Anime?

Hahaha I can't stop laughing at this, that seems like an effective way to get someone into anime!

As for me I've never really had anyone say anything about anime to me since I try to keep it hidden (to avoid people pestering me about it). The only person who knows I watch anime is my brother but I think he's under the impression that I've only watched it a couple of times which definitely isn't true heh.

Yeah, but it's not just about boobs. Sadly they'll judge by appearance first.

That is true but it kinda is the same thing as people claiming to not read a playboy for the pictures.

However it sounded like the OPs family had no knowledge of anime so their comment was just immature for they should not have had the knowledge that Kill La Kill is all about Boobs.

Meanwhile, they are properly watching M/R rated movies. When I hear someone saying something like: "Cartoon porn" and watches "M/R rated Hollywood movies with tons of sex involved", I wanna laugh hard.

My father says sometimes that anime are dumb and childish, but I ignore that. And the guys I know in school think that anime are some sick Japanese thing... But they haven't watched any anime. Well, I guess everything I do is sick to them.

@OP lol nice one, though I prefer to point out peoples' ignorance/address what they've said rather than get personal, but yours was a pretty warranted returning of fire.

Spirited Away got me into watching anime. I've discovered even more amazing anime after that... Death Note, Haruhi Suzumiya etc.

I don't get angry/emotional if someone makes a remark on anime. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think of it this way, people who criticize anime have never seen that one anime that inspire them or make them feel emotional, or some people can never be inspired by arts/storytelling... no matter what you show to them.

It's like how a lot of people criticize abstract art, it's because they can't connect with it. Abstract artists are able to connect with the concept, that's why they like it, but most people can't feel inspired by abstract art, so they would often criticize it as... "even a 5 years old kid could paint it".

I see that as analogous to people who criticize anime. But I understand why they do it, so... I don't really get angry since I am the same when it comes to other things like mathematics or football. I can't feel a connection to those things, so they are boring to me.

Fair points. When people feel like they don't get something, they get emotional and prefer to go with the idea that "there's nothing to get", and that the medium concerned is simply trash which puts other people into question for liking it. Once they've established themselves within such prejudice it's pretty damn hard to enlighten them out of it. But that's where I feel like lots of opinions aren't worthy of unconfrontational respect, if they're based on pure ignorance of what they're discusssing for instance.

Seeing as most people IRL don't know I watch anime I don't really have to deal with it except for on the internet. Some guy said that anime is for little girls and anyone other than that who liked it should be embarrassed (he was Romanian, I think they only got Sailor Moon over there). I sent him the opening of Elfen Lied and he then changed his criticism to "see? Japan is just so damn weird", before going on about bug-eyed character designs and stuff. After another reply it was more clear that he wasn't simply trolling, so I gave it my best to persuade him but he just didn't reply to my message. A few days later he was just repeating the same opinion again. Yeah, it's sad.
