Is this an actual thing? Do people really care about this? Does it really make a woman's or a man's heart race if they share an indirect kiss with the person of their affections?

I just don't really see it.

Anime:

Megumi: Takashi-kun just sipped from my straw! He stole my first kiss!

Real World;

Mary: Ew! Tyler just sipped from my straw! HE GAVE ME HIS GERMS!

At least how I see it.

I don't believe this type of thing could ever happen for a Guy like Me, IRL. Qualeshia pretty much hit the nail on the head with how the situation would more than likely go down, IF a happenstance like this WAS to ever present itself.

But in Anime, hey, anythings possible now isn't it? :D

Yeah considering I share some of my drinks with people at times, they usually try to avoid touching the rim to not get my germs in their mouth. The rare occasion does occur where they put their lips on the rim and I happen to drink at that spot afterwards. In that case, indirect kisses everywhere! Not that it matters anyway, it's not that special or "Oh, my heart....its beating so fast....why...?" worthy.

In anime its a big deal.. In real life not so much. I remembered one of my classmate licked this gummy worm and gave it to my teacher to eat. They thought it was nasty because of the germs but no one thought of it as an indirect kiss.

I've never understood why it was a think; I've shared drinks with plenty of folks.

Then again, I had toys with lead paint in them growing up, drank water from the garden hose, played outside growing up, and was driving a car before mobile phones were a big thing (at least, in my neck of the woods). Sharing a drink was nothing; bunch of friends out playing and rather than grabbing 10 different bottles of water, you grabbed two empty milk jugs, filled 'em full of water and passed it around when you took a break.

I'm generally fascinated with a lot of the questions like this, "why so much fascination around the indirect kiss?" or "why do a majority of anime heroes/heroines tend to be 12-16 with fully-formed early-20's bodies?" or my personal favorite ... "why the obsession with the magical girl thing?"

Anime is so neat and interesting ...

I think it's a thing with some people.

I think it's just that, as with everything else, it's far more exaggerated in anime.

YUP, ANIME EXAGGERATES ALOT OF THINGS...and can make stuff really unlogical XDDD
Honestly, if sharing any sort of saliva with another being is an indirect kiss, I'm sorry to say but...you have therefore been having indirect kisses with your parents, friends and possibly even strangers since childhood ._________.

Personally, I once had to inflate a blow up thing for swimming and my friend couldn't get it done, so I took over. It didn't ever occur to me that it was something 'special'...I just blew up and helped out, thats all.

Considering that a theory on why we kiss is to share certain germs...

If you're a teenager and you're sharing a soda with your crush at lunch, I can understand the butterflies and why that might be exciting to a younger pseron. As an adult it's more like "Why the hell are we sharing?"

For me, I'd add, "Get your own dang soda!"

I find referencing indirect kisses is best used if I want to make my best friends uncomfortable. Otherwise, as has been previously mentioned: mono. Who knows where they've been.. ehhhhhh.

You know ... that's a good question. When I posted my response I was firmly rooted in my past. I can't think of a single drink I've shared (outside of letting my daughter have a drink of my water or some such) since adulthood.
