The Blu-ray player itself can be set to output at different resolutions. For example, if someone had only an older 720p HDTV that couldn't even handle a 1080p input, it certainly wouldn't do to have a Blu-ray player that could only output 1080p.

While you might find some very early Blu-ray players that only provided up to 1080i output, rest assured that even a bargain basement no-name brand Blu-ray player manufactured in the past few years supports up to 1080p output.

As for the discs themselves, that can also technically vary, as listed here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Video

Most discs have the video encoded as 1080p, although 1080i and 720p encodes are not unknown. As you'll note, a disc could even be encoded at DVD resolution, although the only practical reason for a company to do so would be able to fit more episodes on a single disc (at the expense of significantly limiting their market vs. a release on DVD).

I didn't work my question properly ! I meant when streaming episodes from CR , what resolution am I actually getting ? Example : if the show I'm watching is 1080P , my settings are at 1080P , is it streaming in 1080P ? My 50" Panasonic plasma only shows the connection (bluray player) is at 1080P , not what the signal is . But when I watch OTA local channels it shows resolution & if it's HD or SD ...hope I explained it better

Some of the apps max out at 720p, but your BD player may be upscaling all streamed video to 1080p.

Crunchyroll's Panasonic app only provides up to 720p for streams:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/02/21/crunchyroll-app-now-available-on-panasonic-tvs-with-viera-connect

The app is for Crunchyroll subscribers only, and offers access to HD (up to 720p) videos.

Thanks there old AncientOne ! So it's actually no better than my xbox 360 ...but it "should" be upscaled to 1080P . At least it's better than my roku players . Edit : My bluray player is doing the streaming (Samsung) , not the tv (Panasonic).

Sorry, I thought the Blu-ray player was Panasonic. I failed to take note the sub-section of the Help! section this was posted in.

Unfortunately, I believe the Samsung app is limited to 480p, like the Roku. It was definitely only 480p when announced:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-772242/crunchyroll-is-on-samsung-smart-tv-now

We are also planning on rolling out 720p and 1080p to Samsung Smart TV later this year.

That was in August 2012, so one would expect it to have HD now, but I don't recall such an upgrade being announced in the interim (as there was for the PS3 app, which also originally launched with only 480p).

Keep in mind HD for the Roku was first mentioned only months after the app for it was released in December 2010, and at their Otakon 2012 panel, they stated:

Kawamura moved into the Q&A session with a question about HD support on the Roku streaming device. Kawamura says that he doesn't have a timetable for it yet but he's hoping that will happen within the next year.

That was in July 2012, and they finally submitted an HD-capable app for the first time in late August 2013, so they almost made it.

To be honest , it's such a mess what is & what isn't in hd , what resolution is it in , that I wonder why nobody from CR themselves will give a straight answer . I've seen one post saying only in 480P & then another saying 720P with 1080P coming....so many promises...like being married - LOL

In some cases, even CR can't agree. I've seen BK state the current iOS app can handle 1080p, but only encodes up to 720p are provided, but later saw Bjaker reiterate that it is limited to 480p, even after I called BK's statement to his attention.
