Have you ever felt there was an anime series that you thought it didn't need a season 2 or 3?

I don't know if you'd consider it a second season or not but, I do. In Sword Art Online when they go to Alfheim I didn't think that was really needed. I was actually satisfied with the first twelve episodes. Everyone got out safely (Presumably) happy ending end of story.

And the thing that ticks me off the most is that this show is getting a second season, while Reki Kawahara's other work is not (at least not yet). SAO has a complete story as is through 25 episodes (or even 14 if one thing was changed), while Accel World is still a work in progress. Accel World needs a season 2 far more than SAO does seeing that the main problem presented at the start is nowhere near a resolution, while it was resolved in SAO. But of course, SAO has a much bigger profile, and that is what dictates which shows get more seasons than which shows need it.

Wow. I'm a little surprised there's another Accel World fan. oO;

I didn't really think that Chunibyo needed a second season. I really liked the first season and thought it ended at a perfect place. The second season didn't really add anything and although I thought it was fine, was disappointing compared to the first.

But the Aincrad arc didn't end until episode 14.

Episode 14 then. In my defense a lot of the smaller animes do end around episode 12 or 13 (Unrelated but, with at least one fanservice trip to the beach and or hotspring)

SAO has the source material for a second season. End of story.

I don't think Accel World sold that well.

Shinsekai Yori does not need a second season. It can't really have a second season. It was 25 episode long story and there simply won't be more after the end. See it like a 9 hour long movie about someone's life story and her struggles in life watching societies clash.

Oreimo. For a couple of reasons...

I watched the first season (here on CR) and it was OK enough that I started the second season. Was immediately confused. Apparently the "true end" is a bunch of OVAs that drive the story. The OVAs I've seen typically aren't canon, but these are. Still haven't seen the OVAs; they're not here on CR.

Because of this, I never finished episode 1 of the second season, but I guess that's fine, since it sounds like it went in a direction I probably wouldn't have enjoyed...

So thinking about this some more, there are shows that didn't truly need a second season, and then there are shows that needed a second season, but totally messed it up. So with that, I am separating the two types of shows here.

Sword Art Online - Didn't need it. Main story was resolved halfway through, while the second half didn't really accomplish much.
Infinite Stratos - Needed a second season, but totally messed it up by introducing something that was never explained by the end of the season in favor of fanservice without a purpose.
Chuunibyou - Needed a second season, but if it had changed one thing at the end of the first season, it would not have needed one. The second season goes absolutely nowhere in terms of development.
Oreimo - Didn't need it. The only thing second season really accomplish was to ruin the MC's reputation with me.
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle - Needed it, but the second season was a big waste of time as it stopped following the manga halfway through it. It needed to be adapted like the OVAs.
Ah! My Goddess - Didn't need it. The main story was resolved, and the second season was just lots of random stuff.
Squid Girl - Didn't need it. Given the nature of the show, it just didn't need it.

Adding my vote to the Oreimo stack.

I am tempted to say Magic Knight Rayearth, since the first season had all the closure the series needed, but there are so many great characters in the sequel ....

Blu-ray sales in Japan for volume 8 (the final volume) were 6,224 (per http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=566783), not to mention an additional 1,418 sales on DVD.

That's down from 9.138 combined Blu-ray and DVDs from the first Blu-ray volume (http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=473845). Declining sales as a series continues isn't unusual, but 7.6K isn't bad at all for a final volume, and would normally easily justify a second series.

"FLCL". People clamored for more...I say, No. It was absolutely perfect as perfect can get. Adding ANYTHING whatsoever to it, would only ruin and dampen it's "Epic"...Yes it was very Short. But the Story was told. And it would be absolutely ruined; perverted, if anything with it were to be changed further ahead in the future from great Events, to even slight Character details.

I kind of think FLCL got the second season it deserved in Kill La Kill. Wouldn't surprise me if those two shows happened in the same universe, either. (Scissor blade versus chainsaw guitar, anyone?)
