How do you feel about people who don't watch anime because it's "over hyped"?

Recently, my friend told me that he wasn't going to watch AoT because it was over hyped. He claims that since the fanbase is so large, that it "ruins" the actual enjoyment. What do you guys think?

Whatever floats their boat.
Can't say that whatever people choose to watch or don't watch bothers me.

I know A LOT of people that think that way! I think it's pretty dumb, I watch stuff because of the pleasure it generates myself, I couldn't care less about their fanbase.

Dear Rohan, wouldn't that mean the fan base is so big because the anime is good?

People who are like that usually aren't worth talking about anime with.

^Pretty much this.

I will say though that in cases like AoT, when I hear so strongly how good a show is, I think I subconsciously like to nitpick at the show because of it.

^that

Overhype makes a show seem better than it actually is, and tends to spoil expectations for people watching the anime for the first time.

overhype does indeed ruin anime. Glad when I watched AoT I didnt even know about the hype (AoT is the first anime ive watched from first to finish, only anime I watched before it were dubbed Pokemon, Yugioh, and DBZ on TV when I was little)

I like AOT. But I don't think it's THE SHOW as people make it out to be. Good for those who do find it amazing.

I usually check it out if something has so much hype.
But tbh, most of them time, I end up not liking it.
Unless it's something between otakus, not every anime watchers. I started Nanana's Buried Treasure 2 weeks ago because of that. And when I watched Nagi no Asukara, I started in the middle of the seasons.

I started Kill la Kill because of all the hype, but I ended up dropping it. It just got bored for me. Hunter X Hunter, I actually like it still.

I like what otakus suggest way better than what normal anime watchers suggest.

Stuff that weren't as good as I heard they were:
One Piece, Madoka, Suzumiya Haruhi, KlK

Stuff I actually liked that the hype got me to watch:
Angel Beats, CLANNAD, Anohana, SAO, Love Live, K-ON, NagiAsu, and so on...

And I agree, but that's what I mean. There's a pretty good chance I like it a hell of a lot more if I just started watching it myself instead of being told how good it was and how bad I need to see it.

There's also a decent chance I don't like No Game No Life as much as I do if I watch it because I hear it's supposed to be amazing.

That's what I told him, but he insisted on not watching it.

Personally, i don't care about other people not watching a certain anime. I'm not them.

Side note though, no matter how much i want to deny it, hype does indeed hinder certain anime for me. If its a show with a lot of hype but it turns out that i enjoy it (AOT), then the hype is something i am able to ignore. But if it's a show i think is decent or meh (NGNL), but is hyped to hell and back, i slowly feel myself growing to dislike said show.

Its fine though, watch shows if they interest you, hype or not.

The biggest problem is if you hear a show is amazing and "the best thing ever!" (or somewhere along that lines which happened with AOT a lot) people are going to try to tear it down. That is just the way people work. My cousin didn't ever watch AOT and he refused to because it was "over hyped as said the internet to him". That is going to happen to some people, so you really shouldn't worry about it. There is a overwhelming size in population that "over likes" a show and makes the general population want to not like it (diehards and such who criticize you if you have a different opinion) and that usually finds a way for me to want to tear them apart. However, I know the flaws in AOT and love it anyways and I think the hype should be taken as something that happens every now and then. A new person to the show shouldn't think along the ways of the hype and think it's the best thing ever, but a person who has been around the block and seen hype before shouldn't write the show off. When something has high expectations it will usually never live up to it, but if you want to try something out, you should always give it a fair shot.
