How do you feel about people who don't watch anime because it's "over hyped"?

The biggest problem is if you hear a show is amazing and "the best thing ever!" (or somewhere along that lines which happened with AOT a lot) people are going to try to tear it down. That is just the way people work. My cousin didn't ever watch AOT and he refused to because it was "over hyped as said the internet to him". That is going to happen to some people, so you really shouldn't worry about it. There is a overwhelming size in population that "over likes" a show and makes the general population want to not like it (diehards and such who criticize you if you have a different opinion) and that usually finds a way for me to want to tear them apart. However, I know the flaws in AOT and love it anyways and I think the hype should be taken as something that happens every now and then. A new person to the show shouldn't think along the ways of the hype and think it's the best thing ever, but a person who has been around the block and seen hype before shouldn't write the show off. When something has high expectations it will usually never live up to it, but if you want to try something out, you should always give it a fair shot.

I think that's a mental tic people have developed because the Internet has no filter (not saying it should) so everybody can post anything they want.

It makes you assume everything is shit until proven otherwise.

I'd say give it an episode or two. If it doesn't float your boat, stop.

I think Attack on Titan is a really fun anime to watch.
I think Naruto is boring. I didn't always think that. But recently I have been thinking that a lot.

See two differing opinions on both highly hyped shows.

And I agree, but that's what I mean. There's a pretty good chance I like it a hell of a lot more if I just started watching it myself instead of being told how good it was and how bad I need to see it.

There's also a decent chance I don't like No Game No Life as much as I do if I watch it because I hear it's supposed to be amazing.

Oh definitely. 100% agree with what you said, when you don't have some other person's opinion hanging over your head to create a bias, you're given so much more freedom to view a show as you like.
When you hear a person say "that character is so badass and awesome", you can't help but be skeptical at times and ask "really?"
It just spirals down from there lol

It is a show you need to watch by yourself without hype. Which right now is impossible.

I'm sorry, but I don't think overhype does anything to an anime. Even if I go into an anime knowing a lot of people think it's the best thing ever, that doesn't change the fact that I have my own expectations from the first few seconds I start it. I can usually tell how much I'm going to like something based on how well it matches my preferences. If I get disappointed after watching it, it's not because it wasn't as good as everyone else said but because it wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be.

But aren't those expectations influenced by hype?

Fuck overhype if the show is interesting to you in any way, watch it. I mean I watched AoT with all its hype and it didn't stop me from liking it. In fact it's what kick started my interest in anime. With all this hype and "large fan base" I made more friends.

Maybe ever so slightly, but not enough to make or break an anime for me.

That's really a bad reason imo to not watch something. It might be over hyped or it might be as good as everyone says, however you should still give it a chance i feel. For all you now you might just be spiting your self out of something you might really enjoy.

All this talk about how hyped up AoT is (which it is). What's awesome for me is that I had never heard of AoT somehow. Knew nothing about it. My boyfriend puts it on says he's heard it's good and we just watch it. Free of any preconceived notions and unaffected by hype and I was blown away by Attack on Titan.

Now, back to how I feel about non-anime watchers. I don't really feel any type of way about them except if they're dicks about the fact that I like it. "Ew, isn't that just like for kids?" or "What? Isn't that porn of some kind". It's amazing how some people think it's either one extreme or another.

The one way in which hype does ruin a show for me however is that it draws in a crowd that tend to ignore if not try to justify some easily avoidable or stupid mistakes in the writing.

It's like looking at a puzzle with missing pieces, then having everyone tell you the puzzle is perfect. It's not though, the pieces are missing. When working delivery for an auto-parts store shortly after high school, I had a boss who loved me just because I was always on time. I had to laugh at that notion, because being on time had become the exception rather than the norm.

So essentially hype changes my response from "That was a pretty good show." to "well it was good, but not THAT good."

Everyone has their own prerogative. If they choose not to Watch something just because its too quote, "Mainstream"...that's their business. But it SURE AS HECK isn't going to affect My realization, hype, and in the End - usually, what Ends up having been far from considered as a waste of time.

So let the Haters hate. Remember, Everyone has an Opinion, and chances are...Since Everyone has an Opinion, they're going to Use it. But it doesn't bother Me any.
