Hype is good in my opinion. Sure things aren't always worth the hype to you personally but it might be more then worthy of it to the next guy. Another way I look at hype is out of personal example. I ended up watching the SAO dub on Toonami every week and eventually pursued it further and, thanks to the hype, am experiencing a lot of the other things anime has to offer. I don't think SAO is the end all be all of anime but I feel like the hyped shows bring a lot of fans that wouldn't have ended up fans otherwise. I think some hyped anime are attacked too much but thats okay. I don't like people who site hype or mainstream as a reason something isn't good. It shouldn't be a reason not to watch something, you have to watch it to decide if you like it or not.

I'm one of those kind of people who isn't into the over-hype anime that other people find ground breaking or epic. Hype is fine, but after a while; it will get a bit annoying though it will eventually die down in tone over time.

There is nothing wrong with over hyped animes like SAO or Attack on Titan. I find that it would be a great idea to just give it a try. If you like the first episode or at least it peaks your interest, just watch the next episode or two and see what happens. I did that for Naruto back when it was still new and hyped. I decided to watch the first few episodes just to get the feel for it. If I find it boring, I leave it alone and might go back to it at a later time. If I find it interesting, then I'll watch it through and through. Simple, really.

Attack On Titan is slowly becoming the new Naruto. Anything that becomes popular, people will start bashing it like no tomorrow.

Unless Armin's family comes in and hijacks the plot for hundreds of chapters, I don't see that happening.

Meh, their loss. They should at least find out if they like the anime after some episodes, or even wait for the hype to die down a bit.

Plenty of popular shows have a lot of hype over them. Some less seen shows have die hard fans that can "over hype" as well.

With that out of the way, I've been mocking people for not watching something just because they heard something was amazing. Do they really want people to recommend shows by saying, "well, -Show X- is... okay... I guess..?"

My joke aside about mocking people, I don't really care if people block off things they feel are over hyped. Taking the opposite in mind, people that can only watch things because they have a lot of hype are sheep all the same. I mention that because I don't go harass them on forums saying how they are missing out on "the other" shows because I don't care how they spend their time. It is the same for people that avoid things that are over hyped, though verbalizing that action (or non-action) is annoying.

It's stupid, but that's their problem. If they want to miss out a great series because it's "too mainstream", they deserve to for having such idiotic reasoning.

If they don't have time or simply can't get interested, that's fine, but refusing to give it a chance because of the fanbase, that's just dumb.

Hype or not in the end you should only care about what you like and not worry about anyone else. If someone doesn't want to watch something because it's too hyped well don't and that's it end of story.

Thats the exact reason why I stopped watching Attack on Titan after the first episode. I thought it was just so overrated and it wasn't going to be any good. However, after watching the video down below, I decided to give it another go and I finished the series just a few hours ago. I would probably say that AoT is the best anime series I've seen despite some of the flaws.
I think people who stop watching animes just because they're overrated should definitely give it a second chance. I gave AoT and I regret that I gave it up after the first episode. Definitely see what an anime is like for yourself before instantly saying that you don't want to watch it just because it's "over hyped".

You watch what you want, I'll watch what I want. It doesn't affect me at all. I rarely interact with those big "fanbases" that revolve around certain anime.

I think it's silly personally. Getting super hyped often leads to bitter disappointment, but just because something doesn't deliver on the level it was initially thought to doesn't mean it's bad. If you mean they flat out don't even give it a shot because of its immense popularity then they're fools. It's a stupid cry for attention that says 'hey, I'm different from everyone' or they want to feel it was their's, but as it caught on and more people knew about it it 'doesn't feel special to them anymore' which is equally BS. I mean for gods sake it's a bloody show. Life's too short to be making statements about something so trivial. I want a show to be popular because it means more support to the creators and more hope of a show like that or even a new season in the future, wanting it to have a small fanbase is selfish and beneficial to no-one other than your own ego. Even then, when you watch an anime, you watch the anime, not the fanbase. Hell, if fanbases came into play I wouldn't watch any anime in the first place. Just watch the show and don't talk to them, problem solved. If you see them being a blinded fanboy/girl then just ignore them because you know they're stupid, I know they're stupid, so just leave it and watch the anime.
