How do you feel about people who don't watch anime because it's "over hyped"?

Unless Armin's family comes in and hijacks the plot for hundreds of chapters, I don't see that happening.

You mean Mikasa's.

All this talk about how hyped up AoT is (which it is). What's awesome for me is that I had never heard of AoT somehow. Knew nothing about it. My boyfriend puts it on says he's heard it's good and we just watch it. Free of any preconceived notions and unaffected by hype and I was blown away by Attack on Titan.

Same for me, really glad I got a 'virgin' experience of some controversial blockbuster watches like AoT and SAO before coming here. Reading too much criticism for a popular show messes with your head and makes you all self-conscious when you watch it, preventing you from being drawn in as effectively. That's one of the problems with hanging around among fellow anime fans too much :P

I kind of find it worse outside of anime, tbh. I meet a lot of people refusing to watch Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones, or otherwise just not giving them an honest chance when they do, because of the amount of - and in the latter case type of people praising them, sometimes a bit over-zealously.

I refused to watch Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead for the longest time because they were just constantly thrown at your face with their popularity. I'm glad I got over that though... mostly because of TV being slow at the time I needing something to watch. But glad nonetheless.

Hmm. *think* It depends on the nature and timing of the hype, I suspect. I got into AOT because it generated so much positive buzz upon its premiere, for example, and I had been hearing good stuff about Fate / Zero before that even came out. The problem occurs, I think, when people hype up a show that has been on too long, or that has gone past the point of being any good. (Or, in addition, has developed a toxic fan base.) I tend to put aside shows like those in favor of digging for ones that have been overlooked.

People who don't watch something because everybody else likes it ------>hipster<------ or they liked it before everyone else and now they don't

I can understand the reason not wanting to watch something if people spoil plot points while hyping up a show. I can also see if someone that you dislike is always hyping up something you tend to dislike it by association. That has happened to me. Before I never had a problem with zombies. Then I had two classmates who were obsessed with zombies and I couldn't stand those two. Now I have a strong distaste for anything with zombies in it. It's slowly starting to dissipate but it will be a while before I watch anything with a strong zombie focus. In most cases the outside hype doesn't even factor in my anime watching.

People need to learn to separate the fan base from the anime for popular titles.

Like if someone has only seen Bleach and acts high and mighty around other anime fans as if they're the end-all be-all of the community and know everything there is to know about what makes a quality anime (Bleach), that's annoying as hell. And it's something that happens with pretty much every huge Shonen title that gets made.

But does that mean you should never watch Bleach? It's probably worth at least giving it a try if you happen to like similar series like Yu Yu Hakusho.

The anti-fanboy backlash has gotten out of hand recently. It's to the point now where people are calling out the fanbase for an anime as being "horrible" before the anime even finishes its run or has achieved it's full measure of popularity. People are STILL railing on and on about how horrible SAO fans were a couple years ago even though the majority of them have moved on to other anime. Attack on Titan was the same thing- sure it was hyped to start but it wasn't *that* huge. Yet people were complaining about the fans right out of the gate as if they were the worst thing that had ever happened to the anime community.

I just like to watch good anime. I don't let all these arguments about fan bases and "over hype" get to me. Immensely popular series or hidden gems- they're all fair game in my eyes.

Recently, my friend told me that he wasn't going to watch AoT because it was over hyped. He claims that since the fanbase is so large, that it "ruins" the actual enjoyment. What do you guys think?

I think he is a Hipster. XD

The series is worth watching in order to make your own judgement on a series without the fan-base getting in the way. Ignoring the fanbases of things is mandatory for stuff like AoT. Now, longer series like Naruto or Bleach that may have lost its way, it is more about the crazy fans blowing up on anyone with a different opinion than they have. :/

Dont really care too much for them. Anime isn't really over hyped, only certain shows are. If they are the kind of people who only like things if they are "unpopular" and want to be a hipster about it, then i would rather not have them discussing anime with me in the first place. They are only hurting themselves by not watching it

I suspect that a lot of this is trying to be proactive. Anime / manga fandom has a pretty lousy image, and people are trying to stamp down elements that might make that worse before they get out of hand. Laudable, perhaps, but it can create more problems that it solves. (What good is our image if we're not seen as welcoming to new blood, after all?)

Don't care.
It's their personal preference. I rather just leave them alone instead of constantly pestering and begging them to watch it. Eventually, some of them will watch it.

I really don't care about them.

Though personally I wouldn't avoid to watch an anime just because is overhyped. I watch what I want and I don't let other people ruin my enjoyment. Also I have learned to have not high expectatives about an anime/book/movie/whatever just because someone think that "it is the best thing ever".
