How do you feel about people who don't watch anime because it's "over hyped"?

Its their loss. Its okay to not like anime that has large fan bases but to skip watching an anime, especially one in the genres you like, just because it has a large fan base is silly.

That's like saying you don't want to try a cheeseburger or fries because too many people like them.

I really don't care about them.

Though personally I wouldn't avoid to watch an anime just because is overhyped. I watch what I want and I don't let other people ruin my enjoyment. Also I have learned to have not high expectatives about an anime/book/movie/whatever just because someone think that "it is the best thing ever".

Ooh! Makes sense!

People who don't watch a certain anime because it's over hyped aren't real anime fans and if anybody disagrees, this is for them.

For the most part I tend to agree with everyone here saying that this not watching something because of hype is stupid. But I used to be like that a couple years ago and I didn't watch lots of shows because of hype they generated. My mentality at the time was some where along the lines of since it's super popular it must be generic crap. And yes my head was really far up my ass at that time.

Time went on and the shows I would restrict myself to where become less and less, and not mention some were pretty horrible. So slowly by slowly I started to watch different genres and eventually I got to some one the super hyped shows of the time. And I actually really enjoyed the shows that I began to pick up. I haven't looked back since then and for the most part I can watch and enjoy all kinds of shows even the super hyped ones and enjoy them. The only thing that still bugs me with hype around shows is when the fan base goes and proclaims their show to be the best most amazing thing that ever existed. I will still go and watch the show in question, but I will admit I go in jaded.

I think people do this because it makes them feel superior to other fans, because they don't watch the show that everyone else is watching. But those are just my two cents on the matter.

If I see that a show is hyped, I have no problem giving it a try. I think the problem is that too many people go into it with their expectations too high. When this happens to me, I usually wait awhile before watching the show. That lets all the talk die down for a while so I can watch in peace

If you're dealing with something like AoT and are surrounded by people calling it the "BEST THING EVAR", all I can really say is to ignore them. Don't argue or trade insults with them, because that'll just make you want to nit-pick the show, but don't take them word-for-word either, because that'll just leave you disappointed or blind.

Just remember, never let the fans cause you to spite any show, whether it be the Big 3, SAO, AoT, KlK, or whatever else. Watch if you please, and make your own, true opinion. The value of any piece in a visual medium should be determined by the evaluation of the material itself, not it's fans.

Well I can be a little bit like that I'll admit.

If there is too much hype for a new or pending series I generaly put it off initaly because I'm either risking expecting the world of it unintentonaly and that can take the edge off the enjoyment. Or the hype means I might be ill informed about it not suiting my tastes.

For intance somone I know raves about how amasing Kanokon was but I found it to dull and poorly executed. Oddly I don't use their opinion for disiding on if I'll watch somthing.
As a result I tend to wait a little bit and wait to hear about it from people whom have similar tastes to me and then gauge if to watch it as I have a more solid understanding on the animes actual quality.

Using Attack on Titan as an example I put that off untill I got more than "the mangas great, this'll be the best anime ever!"
After a few weeks I heard a few pros and cons and then made the informed choise of "this actualy does sound up my street so I'll give it a whirl".

This of course if only when I'm not one of the people really looking forward to somthing, such as the next monogatari. I'll watch that as soon as I can, hype or no.

Whatever floats their boat. If they think something is "overhyped" and they don't want to watch for that reason I would at least ask them to just watch one episode before completely dropping it because of the fanbase.

The only reason that I could think of why I would not watch an overhyped anime is probably because of spoilers that could drifting around by the people who already watched it. That could ruin it for me.

It doesnt help almost all the hyped shows are action animes, and I really don't get into them. Not into gurren lagann, naruto, bleach, kill la kill, attack on titan, etc. Only hyped anime I got into that I didn't even know was hyped was SAO, mainly because I enjoyed the MMO aspect of it.

Of course, there are always exceptions to action animes, but most of the time, I just shrug it off. Heck, I like sports animes more than action animes, at least their action is something that I can thoroughly enjoy, and I'm not even a person who watches sports irl.
