They needed to pick a damn tone.

Either go serious like in the beginning or just have fun with it.

No Alfheim, obviously.

If SAO is the first anime someone has seen where a cousin is attracted to a cousin then I think they need to watch more anime.

Seriously.

And Sugu was adorable. The wincest was strong with this one.

I concur.

The people that hated the "incest" in SAO probably hate The Irregular at Magic High School.

It was not given enough attention. It is an important element in the arc though. I would like to have seen it developed; that does not necessarily mean being geared to fan service.

I would have probably not added the kirito's cousin liking him just it doesnt really add to the oomph
and i might have made alfheim more exciting it seemed a bit boring
I probably would have more of the sao arc

SAO could have been much more if it focused on world building instead of rushing through games like they were the flavor of the week. In an ideal world Arc 1 should have been at least 24 episodes and dealt more with action and showing us other features of the world. The author had an amazing idea with Ainclaid, it was an interesting world. I will never understand why he rushed through it, SAO is good, but it could have been great.

The biggest change I would make is to have the series cover the entire Aincrad arc, while skipping the ALO arc entirely by having Asuna and the 300 players that Sugou kept captive log out with Kirito and company. If they had just done that, then all would be well, and the gawd awful portrayal of Asuna in ALO would be unnecessary. There should be an episode that focuses on what's going on in the real world told by Suguha, and the final episode wraps up loose ends after everybody is logged out in the second-to-last episode. And I would like it to resemble Log Horizon more in that the game dynamics are only spilled out when it becomes relevant, and with some more lightheated episodes like the last part of the Extra Edition.

As everyone says, the time skipping was bad choice.

Setting up characters takes many episodes and setting up, killing, and mourning a single character in the span of 1 episode is poor pacing.

More action less drama. Seriously if I wanted to classify SAO I'd just call it a romantic Dramady more than an action adventure. How it got on the action block of a Toonami I will never know <_<

Another thing would be making Kirito more likeable. He's not a Luffy, he's more of an asshole.

The incest was not needed and it's moreso just because it was a pointless love triangle. Kirito loves Asuna and would never sleep with another girl, Suguha was just a temptation bait for Kirito and so were all the other ladies of SAO, the second arc would have gone much faster if there wasn't a focus on Suguha's "Oh no. I think I love my friend in this videogame a lot. OH NO HE'S ACTUALLY MY ANTI SOCIAL COUSIN! AND EVEN WORSE HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND!" But I just wish they wouldn't have focused on the relationship development on the Kirito x Asuna side of things. Especially when they're all at the risk of dying. I would think they'd just be training to kick butt more than having a picnic and raising a fairy baby, what's up with that? You might die and you're all busy with family drama time?

Personally I think change the label from action adventure to romantic drama and it would be less of a lie when I watched it.

Changes? If we're talking about the LN, absolutely none. Especially if we're talking about the first volume. It went straight to the point of clearing the game and delved into Kirito and Asuna's relationship so well I can imagine it done any other way. IMO I'd recommend just reading volume 1 of the LN if you just want a focused stand-alone story that doesn't lose it's way. No problem if you want to read the second volume in the slightest, but it seems even the majority who read the LN would agree that Fairy Dance arc that came directly after it sucked, whereas GGO is pretty highly praised even more than SAO from my point-of-view.

I dropped the anime anyway.

Delete the second season, the elf shit.
MAke something where Kirito and Asuna meets irl right after they wake up. And live happily ever after.

Wouldn't change a thing in the LN.
For the anime, make it longer so all the major events in ALO (Jotunheim) could get adapted. The Aincrad arc was fairly well done, ALO was just a bit rushed, and a bunch of people didn't actually know what the series was about and just assumed it was an action anime, thus complaints..

The time skips actually don't exist in the novel. SAO's plot is very non-linear with many of the episodes in the first half being side stories. Also ALO was rushed. Simply put 10 episodes is not enough for the events in the novel leading them to rush some parts and cut out others.

Killing off Kirito early would have greatly improved SAO.

Discuss.

I don't really think that his cousin liking him was incest, and dating and marrying you're cousin in Japan is legal.
