I don't care about such trivial matters.

In japan anime means all cartoons anime and american animations, basically anything drawn and animated, so why should we care either.

I don't feel anything, seems like it's something beyond pointless to care about.

I would be disturbed if you said I had an odor rather than a smell even though a foreigner with a dictionary wouldn't be able to tell the difference. If you're an L2 learner and you could not tell the difference between words w/ similar definitions, you would use them in funny contexts and natives would notice that. Anime and cartoons is the same way. Words aren't just dictionary definitions, they have contexts and emotions.

Besides, one of the big reasons anime is popular in the west is because we wanted animation that is not just for kids.

It doesn't really matter to me. It's like the " you say tomato I say tomayto" thing.

I don't really care. It's the same thing. Anime is just more specific when referring to any animation.

I don't care about it. It's mostly ignorance on the speaker to called anime toons. It's a medium for conveying a story that's all. Who cares what it's called!

I care so much about this subject.

It is like the biggest subject to talk about in the Anime community.

Is my sarcasm coming through yet?

No? Fine I will just be honest.

I don't give a damn about Anime being called Cartoons.

I occasionally use "cartoon," myself. I only really use the term "anime" to let people know that I'm specifically talking about cartoons from Japan, but I sometimes just say "Japanese cartoons."

Western cartoons have a sad stereotype about being "kiddie," I view that as a result of people taking Western cartoons at face-value and not bothering to dig deeper.

Just remember that the first blatantly sexualized furry was Betty Boop during her early poodle days.

EDIT:

It seems that there are stereotypes about Western cartoons having poor animation and flat characters, as well.

It annoys me a little, the stereotype of cartoons is that its for kids so when someone talks about anime and calls it a cartoon it gives the impression that its for kids even if it deals with pretty serious themes or just plain adult themes.

I get that anime is cartoon but I think that separating the two is a good thing.

I get a little upset not going to lie. The reason I get upset is because there's a big difference between the two.
Cartoons:
- very simple characters
- little to no character development
- usually a stand alone
- low quality flat animation
- no overall story arcs
Anime:
- very complex characters with a ton of depth and history
- a lot of character development
- usually has source stories like manga's or comic books
- higher quality 2 1/2 d animation
- continuous inter related story arcing

I cared a lot at one point but when I started to see people ramble on about the differences, it just turned me off.
Ken doesn't talk to barbie about all that sports related stuff. Even though Barbie enjoys rambling about the latest gossip...
He simply sees the incentives to be had if he bears with it. That said, im not gonna pay my friends or family to sit down and watch an episode of Puella Magi Madoka Magica with me.

Point is, people who are completely ignorant of japanese culture can't possibly begin to understand and appreciate what we all know and love to be, anime...

It's even worse when they're so insecure they won't give it a chance or even a second glance. As if letting in all those anime feels and awesomeness will make them less of a man/woman and lose grip of who they are and the world they believe to understand.

Too many of you people care too much about what others think. I see quite a few people complain that they don't want others thinking they watch "kiddy cartoons." Seriously... who cares? It's their problem, not yours.
