That's what they are. CARTOONS. The only difference between the two is their origins. Same for manga.

Hmm.. sometimes it bothers me, sometimes I don't care. I guess it depends on the kind of day I am having and (most importantly) if I have eaten yet or not.

I'm okay with it. Though I do understand why others get offended. Even though they're actually the same by definition. Because of the term "Anime is anime because it is made by Japanese people" while "Cartoon is cartoon from Western Animation" some gets offended or confused. As a result, it became a bit awkward to some people whenever an anime is called a cartoon and vice versa.

So what necromancer brought this back to life? :P

Anyway, a anime IS a cartoon. Just because its a cartoon from Japan does not make it stop being a cartoon.
Anime MEANS cartoon in Japan.

The thread! It lives!

Have I posted in here? I don't know. Probably. I think anyone who gets incredibly defensive and serious about anime being cartoons (which is exactly what they are) just aren't worth arguing with. It would thereby logically follow to call cartoons made in other countries, what they're called in the languages of those countries. I get that you imagine different things with the two words, but that doesn't stop arguing seriously about it from being pointless and stupid.

The problem is the meaning that comes with it due to said origins. Cartoons are almost completely comedies with most being for kids. Even the few adult cartoons out there tend to be slap stick comedies. The only exceptions are rare shows like Avatar which is so much like anime that those who define anime by it's apperance consider it one and a good few comic book based cartoons.

Anime tends to be aimed at a much older audience with even the shows for kids being a big more intense than American kid's cartoons. Anime also tends to have more plot and character development even if a lot end up pretty cookie cutter in the end.

So when people call anime a cartoon they tend to look at them as if they are American cartoons. After all you know those people who act like anime is just for kids right? Those people tend to be the same ones who will call anime "just a cartoon" or will consider anime just another name for cartoons but won't consider them different.

So while calling anime cartoons isn't exactly wrong it tends to be misleading.

I don't really care, honestly. I use the term "anime" because it gets the point across and we've formed a distinction here, but anime >> animēshon >> animation >> can be synonymous with animated cartoons.

Anime is an art form, specifically animation, that includes all genres found in cinema, but it can be mistakenly classified as a genre.[8]:7 In Japanese, the term anime refers to all forms of animation from around the world.[1][9] In English, anime is more restrictively used to denote a "Japanese-style animated film or television entertainment" or as "a style of animation created in Japan".[2][10]

Because of the stylistic similarities between comic strips and early animated movies, cartoon came to refer to animation, and the word "cartoon" is currently used in reference to both animated cartoons and gag cartoons.

I don't really care. Insisting that they're all children's cartoons is false, but I'm not going to go over into a rant about how wrong they are and why they're scum for insulting a form of entertainment I personally enjoy.

If they won't shut up about it though, we may then have a problem.

lol. Futurama and Family Guy are cartoons... it's not like people go up to you when you're watching them and say, "oh you're watching cartoons?!" I put anime on the same level!

I understand and agree with your explanation but I've decided a long time ago to go with the dictionary meaning of anime. Well, not dictionary but more like the meaning i learned in my japanese class and from what people who I know/are japanese have taught me. As printed in my japanese book Cartoons =ANIME (アニメ)
