How do you feel about anime being called cartoons?

For me, I find that incredibly bothersome, despite that fact that you can argue both ways. Either way, when they're not looking, I throw the finger at them.

Seems to me that "anime" is a French loan word so that makes the whole question pretty pointless to me.

Like I have said before, if you go to Amazon.co.jp and look in the "Anime" section you will find anime and Disney cartoons and pretty much anything else that gets labeled as "cartoon" in America.

I think that people keep asking this question is the most annoying thing...

It bothers me quite a bit. Mostly when people don't notice the differences.
Really though if it's someone I know knows absolutely nothing about anime I'll deal but otherwise I'll rage.
I know some people who watch anime and I'll overhear a conversation they have with someone else who's asking what it is saying it's Japanese Cartoons and that really pisses me off.

Since all animation, that isn't CG or stop motion, are called cartoons to your standard English speaking western audience. I would have to say no I am not annoyed by it.

And the thing is all western animation wasn't aimed directly at kids to start out with. BUT eventually as their reputation grew as being for kids, more and more places decided to aim it solely at kids.
If you think about this, most places that crank out cartoons, aren't called cartoon studios but animation studios. Why does that matter? Well, that means it is just the public calling the animation a cartoon and maybe the marketers.
Which leads to my opinion that forcing the idea that anime and cartoons must be thought of as separate things is just marketing and fanboyism. Though that being said anime does focus on many more genres than cartoons. And the animation quality from anime usually seems higher than some of the cartoons that get published. But there are some quality works from "cartoons" too.

I don't know what I am prattling on about anymore... I just know I will call Japanese animation "anime" in most cases, and Western animation "cartoons" in most cases. Solely because of social norms, and it helps keep two separate. I do see differences they have, but at the same time they both essentially the same thing from different cultures.

It only irks me with the implication cartoons are only for children.

How about people who are self conscious about their breast size? "Personally I don't see why people think it matters". Other people do. Now you get it?

They are cartoons. I don't care if someone calls them cartoons as long as they know that half of them aren't for kids. I only find it annoying if they make fun of someone for watching anime because their cartoons even though they themselves watch south park or family guy, those are cartoons too. >.>

I don't really care, and it doesn't really seem like the Japanese do. All cartoons are anime to them, even Family Guy is referred to as anime in Japan. So, why wouldn't cartoon be used to refer to all animation when in America?

It seems the only problem is the mind set that cartoons are for children. Look at Family Guy or American Dad. Both cartoons. Neither are for children.
