I prefer Dialogue driven anime, as to Action driven anime. I mean, i love action and all; but it seems that in more action driven animes, characters get alot less love and development, as the whole focus is the action. (there are obviously exceptions to this, but this is simply what i have found in general). I find that in more dialogue driven shows. Characters take a front seat role to the action, and you can see them develop over time (changes in the way they speak and address others) And you can really get the feel of specific characters, that would often be brushed to the side in an anime with more of an action focus.

Depends on my mood

I like dialogue driven anime because of how deep the show usually gets and how much tension comes between characters. Characters are typically well developed and aren't shallow for the sake of being shallow. I like the sort of tone that it sets for itself, course this isn't always the case, but most of the time it has this very serious tone or very easy going type of tone. Both are good it just depends on the show itself and what the plot is like.

I like action anime because it's full of suspense on what's going to happen next and for the action-scenes of course. Although some characters are usually shallow in action shows, I find that the action really makes up for it because something is always happening not much time for fillers, unless it's one of those long running shounens. The plot lines are usually more thrilling since it's usually about some apocalyptic event that wipes out most of humanity or some high goal that the main character has set for him/her self.

As long as it's good, whatever premise fits the show better is fine with me.

Then there are some shows that don't know what they want to be, like Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei.

Either or.

Hate it when characters go on spiels in the middle of an action sequence.

Looking at you, Bleach...

Its funny that you mention Mahouka, LionelJeid, as that's the show I'm currently watching and what prompted me to post this question.

Yeah, I gotta watch the latest episode, but my opinion of it so far has been "It's a shounen that took out all of the strengths of a shounen because it has to be so in-depth with the info dump".

But maybe the latest episode changed that.

I prefer dialogue/character driven to action driven. I LOVE character study shows. The bulk of my Top 10 are shows that focus primarily on their characters.

That said I do have a few action shows in my Top 10, but those shows have strong dialogue/characters and a good story/theming to them. They aren't there simply because of their action.

Action. Not even close.

Why? Simply because I wish to be entertained, not lectured.

Wow this is actually a toughfy for me since I prefer both equally...but I will have to agree with Lione....w/e fits the premise best is what I will prefer...Some shows should thrive on being a character based(dialouge), i.e Drrr, while others just work best as simply being action i.e KLK. Taking Drrr for example, it has nice actions here and there, but what makes Drrr resonate with me so well is how the characters within the show are explored so well that you are not only able to understand what they say, but can picture yourself or someone you know like this. With that said Drrr could have easily been a Top heavy Action driven show due to the premise/magic/mystery, but Dialogue simply fits the show stupendously.

As To MHS....yeahhhh.....

Eh it depends really for me. I prefer a bit of both since mindless action doesn't necessarily equivalent to interest all the time. Shows like Monogatari, Eccentric Family, and SNAFU's dialogues were some of my favorites from last year and none of them had exquisite action.

Action on the other hand can be quite entertaining with shows like SnK, Kill la Kill, and F/Z.

Oh speaking of F/Z, some of their dialogues are also quite interesting; referring to most of season 1.

I really like both to be honest...
If I like the characters, premise and story I'll happily watch almost anything (I'm pretty easily pleased I think).

One really good example of both was Zetsuen no Tempest. When it started I thought it was going to be another action style anime that glossed over the plot a fair bit, that would be predictable. Well. That was silly! Really enjoyed it in the end, even if there was little 'action' to speak of later on, especially compared to the beginning.

However, I must say that despite spending at least 3 consecutive episodes standing in the same spot talking, that was by far the most exciting part, in a good way. Kept me (and seemingly those who commented) interested, for that much dialogue. Very good series

Oh and also speaking of F/Z, I absolutely adore that series... :3 good balance between action and dialogue imo, nice characters and character development, whilst keeping the bad-ass action in. I'm looking forward to the F/SN remake (please be licenced in the the UK :3), hopefully it will be similarly good

I like them both, though they certainly have their faults, which can be apparent when a show is predominantly one or the other. On the action-oriented end, Kill La Kill confused the hell out of me, since the fast pace can make it rather difficult to keep up with. As far as dialogue goes; the first Kara no Kyoukai movie confused the hell out of me, due to the convoluted talk of "floating," "flying," and "falling."
