Can't believe Ivory Coast came back and won. I thought Japan had the game after Honda scored that first goal.

Would love to see the USA win the cup so we can get full recognition within our country. My generation or age group what ever you prefer loves the sport its just the "older" generation that cant seem to accept it. If the US doesn't make it I'll be watching to see if Spain can retain their crown.

I would love to see USA do alright. They won't win or anything like that, but it is nice to see the sport be a bit more popular in the States.

And I was surprised to find out that the men's Team USA is ranked 13 in the world - that is amazing coming from a country that is not dedicated, obsessed, or really likes soccer at all and always puts down their own team! Just imagine how much better they could be if they got support! And despite all this, they usually get into the World Cup anyways. Not too shabby considering the dislike of soccer in this country.

The women's team is of course great.

It wasn't a good draw for Japan. They were smaller and slower than CIV. I don't see them making it out of the group stage. They don't look like they would match well with Colombia. Maybe they can beat Greece.

The early matches have been interesting. I'm interested to know if the Dutch beatdown on Spain was legit, if Spain's too old and the Dutch kids really that talented.

I just don't want America to win it all (they don't have much of a chance of getting out of Group play with both Portugal and Germany in their Group, so it's not like I need to worry). That might actually create an interest in soccer stateside. I don't need the Timber Army having more ammunition for getting bars in the Portland area to show their matches. I have no interest in losing an opportunity to watch college football so doppelgangers of Coldplay's drummer can watch the timber match at the bar.

Germany will win for sure this year. well, if they r in healthy and safe and sound, they will win for sure.. the reason they got 3rd place in 2010 becoz Thomas Muller was suspended for the semi-final defeat against Spain if only he wasn't suspended, Germany would win in first place in 2010.. oh and also they won 3rd place in 2006! Go Germany!

Our USA team does have tons of support. I don't know why the stereotypes persist, but soccer is pretty popular here, especially from the recreational standpoint. Anyway, it's why NBC bought the EPL rights from Fox Soccer, because they know it's a growing goldmine. I doubt it will ever rival football in the States, but its definitely not unpopular.

However, our talent base isn't that great (there are talented US players out there, but they don't make it to the top ranks for a variety of reasons). We've also got a team that's sort of in the rebuilding stage, so...I don't know. I want us to win but I haven't been impressed.

Ok, now for the WC...I was sad that Japan lost. I'm rooting for them, especially after being so impressed by the women's team in their WC. I do think the Netherlands will win the whole thing though.

Daley Blind and Oscar were friggin tearing it up, and Pirlo had a marvelous game. It seems to me like most forwards and strikers are not ready for the WC or are just lazy, with the exception of RVP. I think whoever has the most creative and possessive midfield will win the tourney.

That was a tough loss for Japan. They played a good game, and it was those two goals in two minutes that undid them. They play hard, but they are just outmatched. It's going to take a lot for the Samurais to make it out of group play.

Team USA is up on Monday, and if being in a group against two European heavyweights and Africa's best team wasn't enough of a nightmare, there's brutal travel schedule that takes them to the faraway city of Manaus where the turf there is pretty chewed up. With the way the team is put together, it looks like they are built for 2018. Anyway, they are improving their profile, but not yet to the point where they are in championship contention.

Unlucky for Japan but I felt Ivory Coast deserved it in the end. I thought England were unlucky against Italy, only thing that let the Three Lions down was the final ball and finishing. Costa Rica I didn't think would get a single point but they have proven me wrong so hats off to them,

My predictions for today's games:
Switzerland 2-1 Ecuador
France 3-0 Honduras
Argentina 2-1 Bosna i Hercegovina (Bosnia & Herzegovina)

I'm English so... I want England to win but they are just so awful to watch year in year out.

I live in Australia so I expected a tonne of pessimism cause their national side is so bad, but there's this strangely positive vibe.

I tend to have a different team I like to watch each world cup, I liked Japan in the previous world cup, this time round I was crazy impressed by Costa Rica, they made Uruguay look like part timers!

Rooting for Mexico all the way, but I don't think there is any chance that they'll beat Brazil in the next round.

I think that the Netherlands is gonna take the cup this year, I mean did you guys see the beat down they gave Spain!? I think that they have a great chance at taking the cup this year.

On the contrast I personally think they will give Brazil a good game. Maybe a draw at the least. I'm partially basing this prediction on the fact Mexico beat Brazil in the 2012 Olympic Final.

That was some impressive finish there by the Swiss. It looked like it was going to be the first tie of the World Cup, but in the last minute an impressive goal.
