Well, since the anime adaptation was fairly successful and well received, I wouldn't doubt there being a second season. Besides, the manga IS still ongoing and the anime series only went up to the third volume.

What gave you the impression is was "fairly successful and well received"? BD/DVD sales in Japan ranged from a low of 937 to a high of 1,205 per volume:

I will be brutally honest, but I'm too stupid to understand that graph you've shared. So, going by the numbers you've given, it's done well-ish in Japan? Terrible-ish? I don't know. I blame the American public school system.

Going by that table, it's not good.

I'm with you, sales figures be damned. We should start a Kickstarter. After all it worked for some obscure show set on Mars about a girl named Veronica.

Although in reality it can vary by the cost of production of the series, money spent on promotion, etc., a series selling less than 3,000 is normally considered a failure as it very likely would have lost money.

The cost to produce a single anime episode normally starts at around the equivalent of $100,000 per episode. Even if 100% of the typical per volume price were returned as profit, sales as low as those of Watamote wouldn't cover the cost of production at even the low end of the scale.

Very informative, but it doesn't surprise me that much. Even though I praise it, Watamote did feel niche in comparison to the mainstream. I really do want to see a second season, but if that's the fate of the series, then at least I'll still have the manga.

Obligatory "I'd like to feel a little inside Tomoko Kuroki" joke.
