Recently I've found myself drawn to more masculine women in my anime and games, like Ryuko in Kill la Kill, Makoto in Street Fighter, Mikasa in Attack on Titan, etc., which pains me to say, because it seems insulting for me to think that an aggressive, confident, casual female character is somehow "masculine" as opposed to just...you know...human.

Like most people, I prefer active, engaging characters that can make me care, and I'm honestly tired of all the "kawaii" crap permeating the genre. Not that I don't enjoy it at all, but if you eat dessert for every meal, you're bound to get sick.

So, I ask you: What are some of your favourite tomboys? Do you prefer sporty? Strong? Brash? Vengeful? Controlling? Tough on the outside, mushy on the inside? Or am I alone in my specific preference? lol. Either way, I'm curious.

I'm very much a tomboy myself, and as an avid video gamer, I'm a little aggressive. (Okay alot) Most the time playing co op with my guy friend, I'm the one doing most the lifting and get a rush being good at the game. (Army of Two and splinter celll) Heck even playing games like skyrim, Im agressive and my guy on the mic can hear me going. "You aren't going to kill be bandit scum." (more colorful)

Pretty much Im not a girly girl.

So I love having a female character I can project myself onto.

I really like having one badass woman in any anime I watch. (though I do watch some without) but having one is a huge plus to me.

Cute girls doing cute things, aka kawaii girls, are hard to watch sometimes cause I would never act like that.

For me, I tend to go for Tomboys that are Tsundere.

Well...that's because Makoto is hot lol

Anyway, i really like the look of certain tomboys in anime. The ones that look tough but are really kind always get me.

I would say Chihaya from Chihayafuru.

She looks feminine, but she behaves boy-ish.

nothing beats a rough and tumble type of gal that's not afraid of getting her hands dirty!

To name one... Suruga Kanbaru from Bakemonogatari

I noticed that it's mainly characters with somewhat... boyish haircuts. Expected, I guess. Touka from the upcoming Tokyo Ghoul, Annie from Attack on Titan, and Tenryuu from the Kantai Collection are also depicted as tomboys. Also sporting similar short hairstyles. Bangs over one eye are popular, it seems.

Tsundere is getting nearly as played out as moe characters for me. I'd be cool if we could get more in depth characters that aren't just caricatures.

This overlaps pretty easily with the girls-with-guns/weapons category.

Revy...Done and Done.

Actually the whole female cast of Black lagoon.
Although I can't say I prefer tomboy when it pertains to actual attraction when it comes to RL, but anime idealizes it enough for me that my bias gets skewed only when it comes to anime.
