Bad joke, but try to bear with me here. I've seen otakus bashing popular anime, often infuriating me to the bone. It annoys me because most people don't seem to provide any valid reasons as to why they don't like this particular anime. It feels as if their opinions matter more than the people who like this anime and they often devalue the opinions of people who provide a different prespective aside from their bashing. I'll end my rant here, but let's discuss this matter at hand.

Yes, yes it is. I hate when people say "overrated". Its often used as a insult by "hipsters" who refuse to watch shows other people like, even though they are VERY good shows. Sometimes the term "overrated" does serve its purpose, and actually holds true about certain shows. However, the term has quickly become extremely overused and is thrown around with little thought and understanding of what the term actually means.

I also get extremely mad when people use the term, as it gets quite annoying when someone says something is "overrated" without actually seeing the show and giving some valid points as to why they believe it to be "overrated". I get extremely mad when someone uses the term to describe a show that alot of people like, just because they think its "uncool" to conform and enjoy a decent show like everyone else does.

I define the word overrated as 'I don't like something everyone else does. Because of this differing opinion I am right and you should listen to me!' and it annoys me to no end. When someone says something is overrated they often act like that statement is fact, when no-one has the right to decide whether something has had more respect than it deserves, nor is there a solid way of measuring that, either. It has almost become a replacement for the word 'popular', and it's a shame that most people associate 'popular' with 'overrated'.

Something incredibly popular is obviously going to have flaws, but just because it does, and you may not be a big fan yourself, does not mean it is factually receiving more credit than it deserves. It's the ultimate copout word that people bring up to make it sound like their opinion is actually fact, that they're onto something that everyone else can't see, and it's stupid. I also believe it's used by people who refuse to look into why people like something so much, when it's often not so hard to see why. It's a word to be used on subjective matters, and people use it as an objective word, at least that's how I see it. It has its place, but it's tossed around so much that it feels like the idiotic equivalent of children calling something that's bad, 'gay'.

For example, I could give a million and 1 reasons why I despise Call of Duty, but the fact that it's easy to pick up and play, and constantly action packed lets me see why it's so popular, so I wouldn't call it overrated because despite how those two things alone are enough to draw customers in, I can see how they'd lead to immense popularity. I had a similar encounter with someone about Attack on Titan. Yes the pacing's all over the place and characters are rather 1 dimensional, but when you look at the art, the animation, the soundtrack, the gritty story, the feeling of helplessness, it's not hard to see why it appeals to so many people, especially those who dislike the majority of anime.

I wouldn't consider the word overrated overrated, but I do think it is a bit overused.

Its also misused. The commonality with which people call things overrated by just using their own opinion without actually comparing it to public or critical opinion is astounding. Shows generally considered to be bad, are often called overrated by people who ironically sometimes hold the show in better esteem than the majority of the populous.

"I've seen otakus bashing popular anime..."
*Trolls, perhaps?

"...often infuriating me to the bone."
*Please do not feed the trolls.

"...people don't seem to provide any valid reasons as to why they don't like this particular anime."
*To be fair, sometimes we can't provide any valid/logical reasons as to why we do like something (not just restricted to anime, but anything in life).

"To me, it feels as if their opinions matter more than the people who like this anime..."
*?

"...they often devalue the opinions of people who provide a different prespective."
*"They" devalue; the people that hate said anime or their opinions? And wouldn't the fact that they're bashing a popular anime be a different perspective? Even if it is troll in nature...

And as for the title of this thread, I don't think it's possible for the term "overrated" to be overrated. It can, however, be misused, overused, and abused.

Okay, enough thinking everyone! Let's go watch some harem anime! Yay!
