Lol, the title for the thread was meant as a joke.

I don't know when somebody else calls something overrated what they mean, but when I use the term "overrated" with something, I don't necessarily hate what I say is overrated. Usually, I just mean "the myth has transcended the reality".

Overrated does have a negative connotation, but not everything that's overrated is bad, just like not everything that's underrated is good.

For example - I think Attack on Titan is slightly overrated (which I still think is like an 8.5/10). It's still vastly superior to Accel World(which I think is like a 7.75/10), which I think is widely underrated.

Though with the ability everybody has of getting their opinions out in the open as quickly as something is released, it's hard to say anything is properly rated, anymore.

I've seen otakus bashing popular anime..., often infuriating me to the bone. It annoys me because most people don't seem to provide any valid reasons as to why they don't like this particular anime. To me, it feels as if their opinions matter more than the people who like this anime and they often devalue the opinions of people who provide a different prespective. I'll end my rant here, but let's discuss this matter at hand.

"I've seen otakus bashing popular anime..."
*Trolls, perhaps?

"...often infuriating me to the bone."
*Please do not feed the trolls.

"...people don't seem to provide any valid reasons as to why they don't like this particular anime."
*To be fair, sometimes we can't provide any valid/logical reasons as to why we do like something (not just restricted to anime, but anything in life).

"To me, it feels as if their opinions matter more than the people who like this anime..."
*?

"...they often devalue the opinions of people who provide a different prespective."
*"They" devalue; the people that hate said anime or their opinions? And wouldn't the fact that they're bashing a popular anime be a different perspective? Even if it is troll in nature...

And as for the title of this thread, I don't think it's possible for the term "overrated" to be overrated. It can, however, be misused, overused, and abused.

Okay, enough thinking everyone! Let's go watch some harem anime! Yay!

No. I don't like Fairy Tale or One Piece. And I think Attack on Titan is slightly above mediocre at best.

"...often infuriating me to the bone."
Please go see a doctor. You might have bone marrow cancer or something.

I definitely think the word is used too often. People throw it around frequently with any show that becomes popular. Something being popular does not automatically make it overrated.

You mean like people that say the word literally figuratively ? that one always kills me.

Don't you just love irony. Irony also being a term used in an incorrect fashion. Most people when they claim something is ironic are using it incorrectly which is in and of itself ironic in its lack of actual irony. Its almost a paradox. A person unaware of what irony is that says "This statement is ironic" isn't ironic therefore the statement becomes ironic, thus making it not ironic, etc. Funnily enough if the speaker has knowledge of what irony is it negates the paradox as the loop ends at sarcasm.

You mean "overused", right?

Idk, if we follow that line of thinking, almost everything will become overrated It's true thought that the shows that make it big garners the most hate even if it doesn't deserve it. It's irritating though when someone who doesn't watch the anime calls it overrated. Dang hipsters

Ooh, the irony in this is delicious.

There's nothing wrong with overrated things. Well, unless it's offensive and hurting someone/something. Then shame on you. But there's nothing wrong with liking things that are overrated! Will someone elaborate why it's wrong? It's not hurting underrated things.

I don't really like the term overrated in general. In most cases people call things overrated when they don't like something and it has a massive fanbase. If something has a lot of fans and a lot of attention as a result of it, then it deserves to be highly rated. Though being highly rated I think has not much to do with the quality of something.
