Now I wonder if everyone is saying it is illegal because ya'll don't know for sure like me or if you've actually researched it. I've researched quite a bit and get a lot of answers saying it's legal but hey, the Internet isn't the most trustworthy place. Any professional opinions welcome. Something about the issue being in a gray area.

As for ethics, I lost those a long long time ago. I keep the basics lol.

And the music industry makes enough as it is in my opinion. I don't care if their profits dwindle a few million dollars - more than I'll make in a lifetime.

I don't have a moral problem with downloading my music, it's my main source of music.

The only albums I have bought (all physical copies) are my favourite albums because I will actually get my money's worth with the amount I listen to them.

I think it does matter if the artist needs the money to continue with their awesome stuff, and because they deserve it for being awesome. BUT if you wouldn't have or couldn't have bought it and so the only options are to suffer with not having the song or to have it for free some other way like YouTube to MP3 then I think its OK because then the only one put out is you if you don't have it, since either way you do there was no way to cheat the artist out of some cash.

downloading copyrighted materials is illegal (unless it is used for educational purposes).

illegal and unethical.
But if the music industry dried up over night,
I wouldn't be inconvenienced.

Converting youtube music gives you a nasty mp3 file. Even extracting the audio file from the video sounds pretty awful.
There's always that real bad hiss that bugs me the entire time. Just buy CDs, or if you're too cheap torrenting is available and still illegal. Your choice.

Buying from amazon is the best bet, they give you a physical copy and save you mp3 files to download at your discretion just incase you suck at taking care of your CD. Flac all the way

See, I would buy a CD in most cases but I like a lot of Japanese music from anime and just random songs. You can't really buy a CD for them and there is no point if you just want one song (considering they even have an album to begin with).

Also, I would really like to get some legal, professional opinions on whether the matter is legal or not. I'm a little skeptical of the people claiming it's illegal due to several articles I've read saying that it is legal.

When it comes to anime music, it gets extremely expensive. Those albums come with a lot of songs and double versions for instrumentals which sky rockets the price to what I've seen at 40-60 USD per album.
I rarely ever buy those but there is always the illegal torrenting alternative which i don't recommend.

One thing is true though, the japanese music labels aren't focused on illegal downloading of their music from foreign countries. Like say if you torrented a music from a US record label and you're located in the US. They will most likely contact you and could possibly have a lawsuit on your buttocks in no time.

Though for every anime out there, there is an original sound track album. Trust cause I have 30gbs worth of anime music in my itunes.

Ohh... I've never downloaded a single piece of music from the Internet except a remake of the Dueling Banjos theme from Deliverance and it was for my project on methane energy. That's interesting though. I'm not risky enough to attempt a download for any type of music unless I can defend it was for legal purposes. Pretty sure the government is already watching my sorry butt based off some things I've said about them

It's not unethical or illegal unless you're caught.
