Hi :D

A friend of mine who watches a little anime has gotten really into Chess lately. And then he asked me if there exists any chess anime. I know of plenty Go and Shogi animes out there, but no Chess... Any suggestions?

Well, No Game No Life has a chess theme throughout the show. That's the only thing I can really think of that prominently features chess.

High School DxD. Though they don't really play "chess".

Umineko no Naku Koro Ni makes a fair amount of chess references throughout the show. It isn't really chess itself. But the way that the current time lines are referred to as the game board, or how the humans are pieces, fit into how the "game" (which is a murder mystery) symbolizes chess.

I searched around some and i didn't find any anime or manga that story is about chess. So i dont think there exists any for the moment probably because Japan has many other boards games in there country that are more popular then chess.

Just have your friend watch Hikaru no Go. It may not be chess, but that doesn't seem to exist and this is a good show about strategy boardgaming.

Also,
Shion no Ou - Shogi (I haven't seen it, supposed to be good.)
Saki - Mahjong (Completely ridiculous, but the strategy is still there.)

A lot of anime that address the Westernized Chess don't go into depth; in other words they cheat their way out of it by drawing the chessboard and then ending the game in the next frame, most likely because the writer has no idea how to play chess besides superficially knowing the terms, "Checkmate" and "Knights to E4"...

It's a joke and a disgrace to the integrity of the game. If they don't know how to play the game, why write about it?

I have not seen an anime where they address a chess game, and then go through the process of the game, besides saying "Character X" has won the game. "Checkmate".

I don't know of any chess anime but there's a new chess manga called Chrono Monochrome. It's serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday (Detective Conan, Magi, Silver Spoon).

Inubuse Kuromu aspired to be King in Chess, he was so skilled he represented Japan in the World Youth Chess Championship at age 11. However, due to his loss to a mysterious, wolf-like player, he developed a condition where he can't sit in front of anyone?! Because of this condition, he stopped playing Chess and chose to solely focus on his studies until his fingers break. Three years since his loss, while desperately still holding onto his title as 'King' through internet Chess, he meets an incredibly strong opponent. This game…starts his tale to become King.

It could get an anime adaptation in the future.

I like how when recommending an anime you link to an amv that spoils the entire series.

But yeah, Hikaru no Go is probably the closest to a chess anime. It's really good, some of the most character progression I've seen in an anime.

well no. like stated in "no game no life" chess is more like tic tac toe, moreso than almost another strategy board game in existence.

no game no life has a few chess base battle with a fantasy twist. you can find chess in almost any anime that epitomizes the brilliance of the protagonist. but aside from that, no.

but apparently kurodenki got you the best alternative. i can't see a chess nut not like manga if they are into anime.
