Natsume.
Expected to get a show where every single episode is irrelevant come the next episode and to never be able to care for the protagonist.
Actually got: A great story that's told in an episodic form with Natsume being one of my most liked male protagonists ever.

What I expected: An annoying, cynical bastard that I probably would grow to hate.
What I got: An awesome, badass, bundle of absolute OP epicness.
Oh, and in case you're wondering what he is punching in this gif, it's a water tornado made by a water God in the form of a gigantic serpent. Which he later KICKED IN THE FACE AND DEFEATED WITH NEXT TO NO EFFORT. >:D

What I expected:
Fallout with high-school girls, deep philosophical story on potential human failures, etc.
What I got:
Tear-jerkers shaped like snot coming out of their eyes, giant robotic dinosaurs, idiotic stereotypical Americans, giant water-fleas, and Kuroki Tomoko with a slightly matured body (Meisa Ichikawa).
