Meeting online friends in person
Posted 6/13/14
I have met two online friends IRL before. The first was met online through gaming and was a horrible experience. The second was met on a forums and social site and it went really well. She stayed at my house for a week. The only problem is now that she has gone home we no longer talk. I would definitely meet people offline again though.

I've done it twice actually, both great experiences. The first time I had some online friends I used to play xbox with everyday, I chose to meet up with them once because they only lived an hour away and even though we don't play xbox anymore we're still really good friends to this day.

My second was rather recent actually, September last year my MMO guild decided to have a meetup in Amsterdam, there was about 12 of us and it has to be the best experience of my life.

Meeting up with people you have known online for so long is such a good thing since in my opinion, the majority of people you become to trust enough online to meet up with them are interested in loads of the same things so its not strange at all and you just instantly connect.

I definitely recommend it to people who absolutely trust each other enough to take the time to meet IRL.

I think almost all of my friends are people I've known online beforehand haha. I don't know how I'd find awesome people otherwise.

I think it would be cool but location and security (as has been said), how would you share more personal information? One would have to go first and, while anime groups are more mature and trustworthy, problems can still arise that I don't want. You'd have to know them really well and trust them, and live quite close to each other too.

Well, you know, more than creepy and big websites, target audience is different here.

That doesn't prove anything. Just because this is an anime/manga/drama/manhua website, that doesn't entirely determine the sort of people here, or even take into account those who join this site for the sole purposes of creeping and conning.

What do think users like Vega and Lucifer90210 have done to be banned for so long? I've yet to trace a link to Vega, but you can ask around about him. He's well-known. I've heard word about him being currently banned for 40 years.

I think it's a pretty good thing to do if the person is honest. It takes away the persons physical aspect and what you have in front of you is their personality. After all I rather have a not so good looking honest friend Than a good looking Dishonest acquaintance.

Like meeting someone through Facebook or something?

That's pretty common, getting to know friend-of-a-friend and all that.

But like......meeting a guy or gal from an internet message board? Dunno how that'd work out. I mean unless they are an individual who is able to convey enough of their personality and wit that it seems like you'd have something to talk about without being able to use some gif or whatever as a substitute for actual conversation, why even bother to meet up? Most of these things that I have heard from others is that it's just awkward people awkwardly hanging out for a while before finding some awkward excuse to bail.

Not to mention if it's a site like Crunchy and ya bond over a shared interest in shows society might deem improper, that'd naturally be something used as an ice breaker when ya meet up but what if ya don't want anyone else to know you watch those things or to discuss 'em in public?

Or if it's through video games, what if the other person is only interested in video games and thinks you and whoever else is meeting up is just going to play games all weekend?

Seems a lot more effort than necessary to even bother.

Never have, I'm pretty much the same online as I am in person; abrasive, sarcastic, and shy, plus I think it's a waste of time to small talk with people. So I've never made "online friends".
