Meeting online friends in person
Posted 6/16/14
There are a few that I consider really good friends that I would love to meet outside of CR ^^ If they lived closer, we might actually be really close.

I've met some people from Facebook before in person. Most of the time, it didn't really work out. The internet can make people seem different than they really are. So, I'm always wary about meeting people online in person.

I've met a few people I met online. The first time, was during the summer a few years ago. It was just after Freshman year, I think, and it was a boy who actually wanted to date me. He came to my house, and so my mom wouldn't flip I told her it was a friend from school. When he walked in the door, I was so nervous, I vomited all over his shoes.

I'm surprised he still wanted to date me. I turned him down, though. He was such a dick about it. He was one of those guys who were like "oh, you friend zoned me. I'm such a nice guy though."

True true! I met him through Facebook, I think? And I've met one person on CR before. We skyped together, and we eventually met up while I was visiting California one time. Now we're kinda best friends. Her username is VintageVengeance! ^_^ Others I've met over X-Box live, too! But I don't have X-Box live anymore, and I shoulda exchanged numbers with them, or something, because they were a funny crowd.

Depends on who these people really are. I don't really trust people that easily, and it's best not to do it too soon. Sources for evidence is Skype or Google Hangout. Then will see about meet ups. And we'll start in anime cons. (Just that). I do have friends online that are more like family members to me, but it's only a matter of time for us to meet up as well.

Well, on one occasion it did work out, because the person I met with was a close friend via penpal/chat for almost 3 years. It was great to finally meet them. For the FB meet-ups, I hadn't known the people long enough, I think. If I ever make a really great, solid connection with someone online and have a good feeling about visiting, I wouldn't be against it. But I'm staying away from FB for now.

Ah, man. I feel ya...sorry that happened. Nothing worse than a self-entitled assh/le who thinks he can slip 'kindness' coins into a girl and get a date or sex as a reward.

Yes, back in the Halo 3 days I do it all the time. After playing few months with 2- 3 people all the time we decided to met up some where since we only live maybe 1-3 hours a part. they became real life friends after that. We even share a hotel when we decided to attend MLG together. Now almost all my friends online became my real life friends evenly.

lol yea not a big fan of social media i usually like to make new friends through school or work you know just going up to them and starting a conversation but sounds intense and im glad you were able to share a good experience when it came to meeting someone from online to be hones though all my best friends ive met through xbox and till this day there still my best friends. The hard part for me is meeting people that like anime that's why i love CR <# because i get to talk to people that share the same interest as me :)

I don't think I'll ever want to meet people I know online. I would just be asking for trouble

My husband and I have played Lineage 2 for 10 years. We ran a clan and met some amazing people, talked to them over Ventrilo daily - you get used to these people being part of your life.
Our best friend, Keith, lived a state away. We got to visit him, his wife, and daughter. We got to visit him several times.
He was part of our family - even though we hadn't gotten to meet before this, he was in our living room every night for 5+ hours a day, 7 days a week. We emailed, we Facebooked, we talked about mundane things, happy things, important things, and real life. In fact, even though we were playing an online game, we probably didn't discuss the game as much as our everyday lives.

We got to go and hang out with Keith a few times.
In April of 2012, he had complications from surgery and passed away. He was 47 years old. He was our best friend.
The game was no longer the same. Our nights were no longer the same. It is still hard to believe we will never hear his voice again.

We stopped playing the game for almost two years - it just didn't hold our attention anymore because the person we wanted to share our achievements with and who would have also appreciated the same things we did, was no longer there.

Time heals wounds. I have stayed in touch with both his wife and daughter - they came to visit me a few months ago and we caught up for a while. Most of our clan members are our Facebook friends. We have gotten to meet several of them now as they pass through Virginia. Hopefully we will get to travel to see the rest of them.
I value our friendships as much as I would someone that was right in front of me.
Even though they may not be within touching distance, they are no less real, and no less my friends.

Miss you Keith!

Halo honestly was the one of the best games to bring people together. Back in the good ol' days my friends list was literally all Halo buddies because they were just some the coolest people I've met. 3 cheers for Halo and the Master Chief Collection that's coming out!

Other than that though I've got two good buddies of mine who we talk everyday but unfortunately have never met each other due to distance, but that's not to say we wouldn't. We all got each other numbers and just blow up each others phone if we're not playing FIFA or some shooter.
