Let me know if a thread like this one exist or not.
Thanks a bunches.

Explain your opinion in great detail.

______________________________________________________________________________

I just always wondered how much mangaka make even if they do get successful. Mangaka like Oda, Kishimono, Isayama, and plenty more some get good enough pay yet how much. I'm just a bit curious to know.

Bonus Questions:

1. Can a mangaka make near or the same amount as a novelist?

2. How much do you think American comic artist make?

3. Would you like to publish your own manga?

Enjoy!!!

thats a difficult one you have to know how much they earn in the first place as a basis i dont even know that and how different it is for being a novelist. For American artists depends on good known they are i can think only of Mark Crilley right now sorry if i spelled him wrong please correct me.
Well i cant draw so i cant publish anything if i had the chance to and had talent why not.

There are a lot of factors and variables in this.

Newcomers vs Experienced mangakas.
Which company is serializing their work.
Weekly vs Monthly.
20 pages vs 40+ pages.
If you hire assistants.
Etc
Etc

Let's take for example a newcomer doing a weekly 20page chapter. I'll just ballpark and say ~$10-11 per page multiply by 20 pages and lets say the company serializing it does 50 issues a year. In one year they would make in the ball park of $10k to 11k.

So as a newcomer who probably won't have enough Tankobons or an Anime for awhile, you probably won't get much. At least not enough to push through paying your bills and keeping up your supplies needed for the manga.

More popular artists probably get a lot more. They probably can get paid into the $80 to $100 range per page, doing the same 20 pages and same 50 issues. But that would net them $80k+ per year instead. Plus they get royalties from their volumes selling (though do note that in Japan manga is only ~$5 per volume so it's less obviously than what we pay, BUT if your popular you are probably selling truckloads anyway), plus royalties if the Anime was made.

With royalties added in they probably could be making well over $100k per year. Also I am just going off old info I know I looked up before. All of this could be vastly different. Oh and I believe American comic artists are about the same (I could be vastly wrong on that). As for me publishing my own manga, I can't even draw stick figures, so I doubt I could even do a webcomic much less something that would be published in an actual book.

well of course it would all depend on the experience and popularity of the mangaka and his/her assistants. They probably earn much more money if they sell many volumes of their manga rather than through the magazine in which they publish.

What I've always wondered is how much the mangaka earns when their manga is made into an anime, and if they received any of the money made by merchandise.

idk about American comics. Though again I wonder how much the artists make when their comics are made into a Hollywood film.

If I could draw, sure I'd make my own manga. I can write a good story.... I'd blow all of those cheesy cliche shoujos out of the water idk about shounen, most of my stories are realistic fiction so..

Enough that is for sure.

Even adding in expenses like art supplies and assistants.

Oda had a great start and worked as an assistant for some other big names if I remember correctly. So he was probably offered a decent enough wage per page from the start, and by this time it is probably 10x if not more than what he started at. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes ~$200 per page at the very least. I can't remember how many pages he does but I know it is weekly so probably around 20-30 pages. WSJ I think does 52 issues a year.

Even if that is a very rough estimate he is making over $200k a year before royalties, and royalties... well it is one of the best selling (if not best selling) manga around selling millions of copies per volume.

Just over $200,000 a year? That sounds like a lot of money to make and yet it doesn't. I was expecting near a million dollars a year only because One Piece is a highly popular manga/anime series.

Well I am just ballparking and guessing. Also it probably sounds better when we actually use Yen. Because $200k is 20.4million¥ if I remember correctly. But given that it is Oda, it could very easily be more. Really his money though I think probably comes from royalties. Even if he is only getting 10% royalties he sells millions of each volume. ~$5 per volume means around ~$0.50 royalty per volume. Say he sells 3million copies of that volume, you are still looking at what? $1.5million? Add into that OP has what like... 70+ volumes now? Yeah you get where I am going with this... he undoubtedly rakes in millions just with MANGA royalties, you also have the anime royalties and merchandise royalties. And that is American millions. Yen we are probably talking a lot more...

Weekly Bunshun magazine calculated that One Piece manga creator Eiichiro Oda's annual income is 2 billion yen (about US$24 million),
It realy depends how popular the manga is,

It's not worth it in the end, he suffers from lack of sleep. because Oda wakes up in the morning at 5:00 a.m. and works until 2:00 a.m. after midnight. He usually sleeps from 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.
