lol what is up with that anyway, why is it such a big deal if you aren't forgiven anyway... it's like " oh no they might not forgive me, it's the end of the world!"

It might be a politeness or cultural thing in Japan, but I've seen that line a lot and got tired of it

I always thought it was more like "I won't let you get away with it". Still cliche, but...

I know the whole nakama thing is big in Japanese culture, but I still think it's bullshit.

Interest piqued. Further explanation requested.

That's funny because in Shitpa episode 6 (If you call it an episode) It has Brain Dead repeatng the word Onii-chan while eating cabbage.

Humorously, trying to Google up a scholarly article on the subject (because those do exist) linked me to ... this topic. Most of the other relevant results seem to be behind pay walls.

Hmm. A quick and dirty sum-up, then: Japanese culture is more collectivist than it is individualist, so one of the most common themes in its cultural products (including anime / manga) is the main character being able to succeed because of her / his friends, coworkers, teammates, etc., rather than because of any inherent talents, virtues, powers, and the like. (Fairy Tail fans like myself have posted many times about the "power of friendship" stuff in the show.) This same dynamic is why you will see a main character throwing away everything – up to and including a love interest – for the sake of a friend.

Now, to Western audiences, who are highly individualist, this can seem corny, nonsensical, or outright stupid; it often comes across to us as bad writing. I am in this camp, so, again, though I know it's a cultural thing, I'd like to see a hero(ine) succeed for reasons other than the "power of friendship", for once. Individual sacrifice for the sake of the team is all well and good if you're a salaryman (which is one reason why the shows beat this drum all the time), but what about sacrifice for an unknown, faceless greater good? Or for love? Or for anything abstract, for that matter?

I hate when anime characters feel they need to remind one another of what their names are every time a conversation gets emotionally heavy.

Oh, yes, this one. This one is annoying. Even when it's clear that whatever happened was accidental, it's said. Even when a guy character is either dressed as or has just been turned into a girl, he will say it as if he's all of a sudden changed how he thinks. It only takes a character walking into the wrong room at the wrong time and you hear it. So overdone.
