The status message is the closest thing to a "signature" that CR's forums have had as long as I've been a member.

If CR put up a "Should we support signatures?" poll, my vote would be no.

If they were going to allow them and the question was whether to support GIFs, my vote would be "Hell no!".

In my experience on various forums they rarely serve any useful purpose, and are more often than not simply distracting. This is especially true if GIFs are supporting, thereby allowing animated signatures.

I visit a forum to read and respond to posts, not to see someone tout their graphics prowess.

Time to remind people about the B1FF wars.... Be warned, this is what happens when sigs are allowed, and this was from the days before graphics, when everything had to be done in ASCII art. (Note, everything after the two dashes is the .sig)
