Good Anime that Don't Appeal to You
Posted 6/14/14 , edited 6/14/14
Evangelion is one. To this day I still haven't seen Evangelion and have no interest whatsoever in seeing it. I'll almost certainly watch it one day (since if you haven't seen it, people give you weird looks) but I highly doubt that i'll like it. For all this hype it better be utterly amazing or i'm going to be extremely bored while watching it.

Replace Evangelion with Cowboy Bebop, rinse, and repeat.

Replace Cowboy Bebop with Ghost in the Shell, rinse, and repeat.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure was a show I thought wouldn't appeal to me. Bizarrely enough, I actually do like it. Just to be clear, though - that show is a comedy right? I've been working under the assumption that its supposed to be a comedy. If its supposed to be taken seriously, then this show is utterly horrible.

EDIT - one more

I was also recommended Revolutionary Girl Utena numerous times. When I finally watched it, I honestly thought it was "meh." It certainly wasn't bad, but it seemed rather stale. I was much more impressed with Onisama e... as a yuri precursor.

Wow, I'm not the only one with Cowboy Bebop!

And now, I'm really going to get some hate because of this, but I can't finish Monster. I think it's because there isn't enough Johan and a lot of side characters who are affected by the two main characters. Maybe I'm just not ready to watch it.

Evangelion is another one. Just doesn't pull me in enough.

I'll admit this might be purely contrary of me, but I recently read a glowing review of Puella Magi Madoka Magica that sort of soured me on continuing it (I've only seen one episode and thought it was okay). I'd also go with Evangelion, as others have said. I saw bits and bobs of it ages ago, and really have zero interest in completing it.

One Piece, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Bleach, Fairy Tail, Gurran Lagann, etc. Basically anything really shounen-y and childish. I know that sounds really condescending, and I don't mean it to, but I just can't get into these. I've tried. I know they're not bad, but I'm just not the audience for them, and I can't get into the really silly action stuff. I tend to be more into the more boring, slower paced slice-of-life and/or romcom seinen and josei stuff.

I also think some others are terrible, but were somehow popular anyway. Stuff like Death Note, Elfen Lied or anything and everything I've seen that's Persona related.

Oh, add one more to this. I loathed Neon Genesis Evangelion. It is so bad.

I cant get into Attack on Titan I watched the first two episodes and I just didnt want to watch the rest at all, it could be either the naked giant zombies were a turn off, or it was something about how I couldnt care at all no matter how I tried for the main character. Hunter X Hunter I dropped as well midway though the ant arc because to me it just seemed like it was extended beyond reason and feels like the mangaka tossed away the other characters as if they were scrubs that get in the way.

Agreed with Attack on Titan part. Personally I think they tried too hard and it seemed to be one big sob story episode after episode.

As for HxH, this is what I love about the series. I hate stories where every character with "potential" is kept alive for the sake of it. some times people gotta die. This is why I consider HxH the Game of Thrones of Anime, cause your favorite character could be on the hit list

A lot of these comments are the same. I got confused so I stopped watching and the hype scared me.

I guess you mean "good" as in they are generally well-received? well imma go with that anyway

One Piece . i ain't got the kind of dedication to watch all that lol.
Angel Beats
Cowboy Bebop
Detective Conan
Madoka Magica
Kill la Kill

I'm sure they're all very good. They just don't appeal to my tastes.

I think the title of this thread could be more like, "Popular anime everyone loves but don't appeal to you" or something, since if it doesn't appeal to you, you must not view it as good. (^_^); The way I see it though... it doesn't necessarily mean you have bad taste if you don't like something everyone else does or vice versa, it just means you've been around the block for a while. That said...

Stopped watching Naruto at Shippuden after suffering through filler. Every time I hear about any new development in that series I'm glad I stopped.

Don't like anything by Rumiko Takahashi on principle. Maybe I wouldn't feel this way if she knew when to end her series... wait, people say the same thing about Bleach and Naruto!

Hated the Eva movie (End of Eva), it just seemed to be a bunch of random nonsensical scenes put together. I preferred the TV ending because at least they talked about interesting stuff, instead of having a scene after scene of boring action (two words which should never go together).

Mahouka Rettousei... I don't even want to give it a chance, but I still might watch it some time to see if it can reverse my opinion or confirm it. I read the manga expecting to love it, three volumes later I loathed the entire series so much, I think setting them aflame might actually take away the anger I feel at having spent money on them. It takes a special kind of horribad to do that.

On the other hand, I could attempt to sell or trade them, and at least they might go to someone who wants them. Decisions, decisions...

Has to be Cowboy Bebop, I really can't get into episodic anime like that. I try but I simply end up losing interest. I need a serialized story. I barely gave a try to the universally praised Mushishi and got the same feeling: this is NEVER going to catch my attention long enough.

I can think of a few, three of which are airing this season. Those being 'The Irregular at Magic Highschool' and 'Mekaku City Actors'. I actually found myself disliking a lot of Shaft's stuff after Bakemonogatari. I don't know if it's down to Gen Urobuchi or Shaft or who but at first I quite liked the whole style and found it different, then when I found all their shows were filled with head tilts, random wind sources blowing hair, and complex dialogue it began to feel less unique and more pretentious. My double standard exception to that rule is Nisekoi.

The third is 'No Game No Life' and while I'm watching it because it makes for a good time killer I don't really get why everyone is so overly infatuated with it. Cowboy Bebop, that's apparently good and I see why people like it, but after about 20 episodes I got bored and dropped it. I also didn't really dig Neon Genesis Evangelion. Again, I get it laid down a lot of tropes and such and had good animation for the time, but when you've seen it a million times before it loses a lot of that 'wow' factor. I didn't hate it but I didn't really enjoy it either. Again, a time killer.

I also didn't finish Baccano because the plot completely lost me due to how complex the whole thing became. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure I couldn't get into because the art style and way everything was playing out didn't get me caring much. I found Sword Art Online enjoyable after trying to get into it a third time, but I feel that looking back on it at how bad the second half was and the 1 dimensional characters it's not as phenomenal as it could be. Speaking of being trapped in game worlds, I don't even remember the name but I know there was one last season and I dropped that because it didn't hold my interest. That's all I can recall for now.

I would say Sword Art Online, Inuyasha, current Pokemon, some Digimon seasons, Ai Yori Aoshi, Gungrave (played the games instead and were way better), Zone of the Enders: Idolo (the games were better) or Kiddy Grade . They just don't feel very colorful.
