Another pointless thread on CR? Surely not!

Yes, anime are cartoons, but when you think of cartoons and when you think of anime you do think of two pretty different things; "cartoons" tends to be associated with more of a childish audience, whereas anime can be much deeper and have more adult themes. Though, that's not to say there aren't any adult western cartoons. At any rate, did this really need to be a thread?

Actually by the definitions...

Wouldn't Cartoons be Anime?

Anime is simply short for Animation.

Cartoons is the Western word for Animation pretty much.

Thus wouldn't Cartoons be Anime? Not Anime are Cartoons?

You're not proving any point. You're arguing arbitrary semantics. It honest to God does not matter what people choose to call this animation or that. Makes absolutely no sense to get worked up over it. If you want to call them cartoons, then call them cartoons and let others call them what they like.

No one is really denying that it's a cartoon. Some people don't like using that word for anime because it draws associations with frivolousness or shows made for children, which a lot of anime isn't. It's the same as calling Pixar-type movies "animations" or calling comic books "graphic novels." A word can be technically correct but convey the wrong meaning to people.

This is all that really needs to be said about this thread. Perfect response.

Also, points for the Iori avatar. You're the first other person I've seen here with a Kokoro Connect avatar.

They're both forms of animation. Not sure what else needs to be said.

I don't give a damn if by definition Anime are Cartoons. Cartoons conveys the wrong sort of meaning because it's associated with children's shows, and the Anime I watch is far from being G Rated, let alone being suitable for children. Just because it's the correct word by definition, does not change the fact that it will always have different meanings to other people.

What do you call shows like The Simpsons, King of the Hill, or Archer?

Actually isn't "cartoon" a copyrighted term that applies only Warner Brothers shows? I ask because Disney doesn't call any of their shows "cartoons", neither does 20th Century Fox, but Warner Brothers does. I forgot to mention CARTOON Network.

I doubt WB owns the copyright to to the word "cartoon". The word itself is from 1843, so they'd be hard pressed to maintain any legal status )pre-existing).
