Do you guys see this series being new-comer friendly or should I invest the time and go back and watch the 2004 series and the film?

You'll definitely need to go back and watch the 2004 series along with the 2010 movie since those both are prequels to the new series. Both were really good (just finished the movie today to refresh my brain on what had occurred in the 2004 series), the only thing that might be an issue is the character designs but if you're used to the head animator for this series (characters have the same style for the newest series as they did before) then you should be fine. It's nothing too jarring

I've introduced at least four people to it in a stream party and they're all excited for Exodus with me too, so it just depends on the type of anime you like. :] It's a thought provoking one at times.

Episode 1

Wow, the visual quality is quite good for this sequel, a lot better than the first season. As for the episode itself, there's some foreshadowing but more importantly introduction of the main characters again.

We'll probably find out more about the story later on but not bad so far. Really curious to see what kind of role that Tsubaki girl will play.

Decided to give this a watch to see if I could keep it with it without watching the previous season. Most of it was fine as they did a good job reintroducing the characters but some of the major points left me confused (how can the girl protect the island for example). I was damn impressed with that first episode so I've decided it's worth going back and watching the previous series first.

Episode 1

Life is so peaceful back at Tatsumiya Island, a far cry from what's going on in Hawaii with a massive Festum attack. But just like that, the Fafner pilots are called back into action. Having just finished watching the original series and movie last month that I'm fully into the swing of things, though I have been having a hard time keeping all the characters straight. Anyway, the visuals are much better considering that ten years have passed since the original season, and it looks like something even bigger is about to go down.

Ep. 1 was good! I think i need a refresher course and will rewatch the older stuffs.

Anyone else notice in the begining, the score being played when the fafners deployed was the same Emi plays in ep. 8 of your lie in april?

I was going to watch the first season and the movie so I won't be confused but the animation quality of the first season sucks so much in my opinion. Maybe I'll check out the movie, but I'm definitely going to give this first episode a watch.

Episode 2

I remember how tough those Festums are, and this one can multiply. But even so it's still nothing those Fafner pilots can't handle, and one of the pilots had to detach an arm to avoid assimilation. As for the visitor, Emery can communicate with Mir and her family was assimilated to stop a slaughter. Miwa and Emery sure are cute together. And now, the military has come calling for Kazuki. It will be interesting to see where this goes seeing how I am having a hard time keeping the names of the new characters straight.

Hope huh?

From what they are fighting for, they better cling hard to that. The battles were good but the story still feels a bit blend right now. Not much else to say but some of the characters are interesting while the world setting has potential with familiar feeling to season 1.
