When i found this site i was pretty excited.I must admit,i usually watch anime online (so yeah, pirated) and finding a legal anime streaming site was kinda unexpected. The idea is great and seems to be growing pretty well.
Sadly,i'm unsure about the subscription fee.I'm italian, and content isn't much (yeah i know, licensing and such).I can live with that, since it's like 8-9 € at month. What really is turning me down is censorship.I know,i read for a while around the web and the forum, not CR fault, helps them having a bigger audience with kids and whatever. But still,it's a turn down.I was watching an anime (Can't remember the name atm) where the main character grabbed the..err.. you know of her teacher.. and i had this white censorship (not fog,not light,it was more like "cut away with paint") big half screen when they were showing nothing (in the anime i mean),since the girl was completly dressed.I immediately dropped the anime.
Now,some may say i'm a perver or whatever, but i think that if anime are done with ecchi scenes or curse word they should not be censored.Try thinking about black lagoon with censorship to make it avaiable to 13-14 years. It probably would last 5 mins each episode or we would have a huge white cloud for most of it:P.
I'm willing to go legal since the fee/month is really small, but if i have to go legal to watch censored anime,i could just keep pirating them. And i don't think i'm the only one that has this attitude. So probably there are a lot of potential subscriber that are not willing to pay for this reason.

I think that CR should try to get better quality content (uncensored one i mean) even if it means to raise the monthly fee.I would even pay double to be honest. And if the issue is with the audience for things like "Kids could see those things" well, kids don't have a credit card.Just make it customizable for parent when they're buying the monthly fee about what their children can watch or not watch, then just ask for a pin everytime that setting has to be changed.

That's all,so yeah, region issue and censor are a big let down, but everything else is just great.
Sorry for my horrible english:P

Took the words out of my mouth, with the censorship. I understand why crunchy-roll does it though, and i do respect it. However they could always use an age gate like you-tube and other streaming sites.

Glad you had a pretty good experience on the site :D. Welcome to crunchy-roll!

The censorship is not done by CR, but rather, is done by the animation studios in order to fit with over-the-air broadcast stations, and to encourage fans to purchase the uncensored DVD/BDs when those are released. Any uncensored videos that may be out in the wild were aired strictly on premium satellite or cable TV channels, which require a subscriber to opt-in and pay for, similar to HBO or Cinemax, and I don't believe CR has ever gotten a video source from one of those channels.

As for the Black Lagoon analogy: well, there wasn't a whole lot of sexual assault in there, just good old ultra-violence.

Crunchyroll doesn't itself do any censoring. These censored shows are the same ones as someone watching over the air broadcasts in Japan would see. Any uncensored versions you see of a currently airing show come from a premium channel (normally AT-X), which cost around 3 times as much per month as CR's subscription price.

For someone in the US or Canada, I can easily point to some of CR's catalog titles as proof CR itself has no reason to censor (as those are not), but for international viewers, few catalog titles are available.

While there is a demand for uncensored content, would enough people be willing to pay the price CR would have to charge? Given the number of people that opt to watch in 360p with commercials or even resort to still watching fansubs rather than pay CR's current subscription price, I have some serious doubts.

It doesn't help that a lot of people, having only experienced fansubs, think that people in Japan can just set their DVR and record uncensored anime off the air for free. I would love to see some of their faces if they ever traveled to Japan and discovered the cold, hard truth firsthand.

Most anime also airs in the middle of the night (during most people's sleeping hours) and if you want to buy DVDs, it costs an arm and a leg for a season and probably the same or higher costs than we pay here in the U.S. for a whole season to get just one disk. Even used anime DVDs cost more than brand new ones here would. Anime is definitely NOT cheap in Japan. We really have it good here! I'm grateful every time I remember that :)
