Is Hulu worth it?

Let me start by saying that I am not in any way leaving CR. Crunchyroll will always hold the #1 spot in my heart and in my wallet despite some of their glitchy problems. However I can't help but eyeball the selection Hulu has and wonder if getting a membership there would be worth it to stream some of their titles on my Nook. I only ever watch anime on my Nook because the screen is pretty high quality, it works better than my laptop for some reason, and it prevents me from tab browsing.

I've been trying to compare Crunchyroll's services to Hulu's and can't decide if it's worth the extra $7 a month.
Things I love about CR membership
- Ability to stream wherever
- Commercial free (!!!)
- Stream quality (though this isn't important to me, and I usually go with SD, the option is nice)
- Store discounts

Hulu ...
- Stream on mobile devices
- Still get ads

... Hulu doesn't really seem worth it. My main reason for CR membership is ad free. I can't really decide if it'll be worth it. There are a lot of shows on Hulu that I want to watch and would probably only be able to do so on my Nook, but I hate ads the most. I have adblock on pretty much everything that doesn't allow ad-free membership.

Funimation app doesn't work on Nook for some reason (?), so any other suggestions on apps for legal streaming? And any thoughts on Hulu's services? Do any of you guys have it?

If you are strictly going for Anime, and can't deal with ads. I will have to say no. Would probably be better to get FUNimation sub instead, FUNi and CR make up most of Hulu anyway except for a scant few selections.

If you are strictly going for Anime but can deal with ads... maybe. Hulu's list is fairly small from what I remember... so you will probably get through their Anime selection fairly fast.

If you are not strictly going for Anime and can't deal with ads.. maybe. Matters your patience, they have quite a few good shows to watch outside of Anime if you are interested.

If you are not strictly going for Anime and can deal with ads, yes. Same reason as before, but without having to deal with patience (cause you are saying you can deal with ads). Good selection with Anime and outside of Anime shows.

I personally don't have the patience to use Hulu and still get ads. But I have tried it in the past. I use FUNi and CR now for 90% of everything Anime related. Everything else is Netflix or the dark side of the internet.

Fair enough. But for some reason I can't get the Funi app on my Nook. I have no clue as to why, I've seen a lot of people complain that it's because they haven't updated it in forever. Regardless, Netflix has even less in terms than any of the sites mentioned before. Is that all there really is in terms of legal streaming?

Don't know about the FUNi app on Nook as I have no Nook, I use the Roku for my TV, since I am now spoiled by being able to watch all my Anime on a 55" HDTV.

There are more legal streaming sites for Anime, but that isn't something I really know, more something someone like TheAncientOne would know. But really when it comes down to who gets what, it seems it is CR or FUNi. Everywhere else just gets shared simulcasts with them, or the simulcast is orphaned (like the Atelier series this season), from what I have seen at least..

The commercials going into the 2 minute range drove me to go elsewhere for anime not on CR.

If you can handle the ads, go for it. Good quality, loads pretty quickly, has shows that aren't anime.

Alright, well I was thinking about getting Chromecast or Roku (still haven't decided) so when I do make my decision and buy one maybe I'll give Funi a try! Thanks for your help. And if you have any opinions on Roku please feel free to PM me as I'm still trying to make my own decisions on that too~

Ads are one of the biggest reasons I pay for membership on CR. Not the high quality, not the store discounts ... ads. I've dealt with Hulu ads before on my laptop when watching Claymore, but I don't really know if I want to pay for ads. Lol.

A Hulu membership will not get you no ads.

So I say it is not worth it.

If you like watching tv, then Hulu is for you. The commercials doesn't really bother me and some of them are pretty funny.

Yeah, I used to pay for Hulu+ back when the ads were ~15 seconds a break and manageable.

Now they're just ridiculous :C

Well when you first set up a Hulu account they will ask if you want to try 1 week of Hulu Plus free. From there, I guess you can see if you can tolerate the ads on your Nook and determine if it would be worth it. Just be sure to cancel the Hulu Plus subscription before the week is up so they don't bill you.

I remember watching South Park with my mom when it was relatively new-ish and the ads were either one super long ad for the entire episode or very short ads throughout. I liked that. Now it's long enough to give me a pee, snack, and text break. Which is damn irritating when I'm trying to marathon.

Still, I want to watch Hellsing Ultimate, Blood+, and Blood Lad!!

Good idea! I suppose I'll go start up the free trial. The only problem I'll have is remember to cancel it (if I do decide to) but I'm sure if I write the date on my hand or something I won't.

I'm glad I could help some. Yeah remembering is a huge problem lol. Maybe they'll send you an e-mail or something to let you know that your free trial is almost over....but you should probably write the date down somewhere just in case.
